Again, agreed 100%

Soring a horse just to be pretty is terrible. those poor horses deserve better.
The Barefoot Barn

Agreed 100%
My grandma takes in a bunch of abused horses and she had a few a couple years back and it was actually so sad. One out of 3 of the horses had to be euthanized. I could never imagine putting a horse, or anything in that matter, through something like that.
~Thundering'Rain~
11:48:41
Same honestly. It's pure abuse. I own a tennessee Walker and thinking of her being in that situation is terrible.

Oh my gosh, I hate big lick so much. Like. I don't see how people actually enjoy that.

the big lick is the worst i'd say.

Raleigh-

That is true as well

The main reason racing gets such a bad rep is bc its the most public and accessible to be watched

If the public, non horse people saw behind the scenes in most other sports, racing would look like the most humane

11:36:18
Any horse sport can be like that honestly. But flat racing is the worst. It gets a bad rep sadly
The Barefoot Barn
11:27:10 B
Agreed. I just hate when greedy amateurs decide to get into flat racing and then they end up blaming everything on the horse. That boils my blood.

When its done responsibly its a great sport.

Even though it's a dangerous one and horses end up getting hurt more than people realize, I do still love it and own horses that enjoy it.

What if HEE added Flat Racing into the disciplines. I would overuse it lol. That is my favorite discipline.

Not that I know of, I'm not usually one to hit my head on things. And I'm going to try get into the doctors when they open on Monday. Though the next appointments are likely over a month away hopefully I can get in quicker because it's rather concerning.

Yikes, have you been able to see like a doctor or someone in the medical field to get it checked out? Or did you accidentally bump into something causing the lump?

This is mainly just for me to track progress rather than clogging my camera roll with videos, etc haha, but I know lots of people really enjoy reading/watching training videos/updates, so I decided I'll do it on here. I'm just going to layout some rules/basic things I don't want people to judge on.
-This horse has sat in the pasture for 3 years. Yes he is very out of shape. He is my 2020 fair project horse and that's the point, to get him back in shape and train him.
-I do not need any negative comments whatsoever. I work with 3 trainers, I do not need internet trainers on here.
Horse Info:
Rico is a 12 y/o registered APHA gelding. He is about 15hh, and cow bred. He was previously used as just a trail horse, so knows the absolute minimum (2 hands to turn, squeeze to go, etc) so I'll be putting lots of buttons on him. He has an extremely goofy personality and is more on the lazier side, but defiantly has the energy to get someone off (only horse that's gotten me off in my 8 years of riding) as I mentioned before, he's my project horse for 2020 4H fair, no he will not be sold after, he just probably will continue in training.
-
I will try my best to post an update atleast weekly, I just have to make myself remember to film haha.

___________
Today I mainly just focused on lunging. I'm a firm believer in working your way ground up. I'm working on teaching him verbal cues currently, and he is picking them up easily.
Ex:
Clicking noise and the word trot means trot, and a kiss noise and the word canter has obviously means canter.
I really just want him to be familiar with the words and sounds, and hopefully it will help him under saddle as I teach him to canter (Just to start teaching him that he's allowed to canter under saddle, and it is what I am asking as he learns the canter cue as well.) I personally train in a more "natural" way I suppose you could say it, meaning I don't use spurs, or anything to force him to do something. A big of thing I go by is a willing partner is a more happy partner. Hopefully I can get videos or pictures tomorrow. :)

___________

There's been a giant snow storm coming through, (partially why I haven't been out in a few days) so it was lots of baby steps since they're we're so many noises (snow falling off the roof, really strong wind, etc.) and since I don't really have a death wish (green horses and noises don't mix well) we only did some very basic things. He is starting to understand that he is allowed to canter very well after over a month of working on it. He gets really bad mental blocks, where he literally gets stuck in his riding. He really needs a rider to push him through things, or that happens, so I'm really happy that he is building confidence. We worked on some neck reining which he is picking up very well too!

Oops, I forgot about this. We've made tons of progress since my last update!
I've gotten Rico to the point where he's fluently cantering. His collection has become so consistent, I'm not having to ask him as much. We made a huge milestone today, I was able to successfully ride him bareback and bridleless! It was obviously his first time being bridleless ever, so it was a really proud training moment on my end. I'll definitely try and update these more!
