This is something I don't think I've ever seen anyone on HEE talk about being involved in, so I figured I would highlight my budding career as a cutter. If you've followed my other forum topics before you'd know I've mostly ridden jumpers or eventing horses for majority of my life, however, I had the opportunity to take a job at a cutting horse barn last September and ever since I have become completely enthralled with it. I work for a barn in Texas under a professional rider (can't share names because it would reveal my place of work) and an awesome team of coworkers and clientele. They have become my family in the past 10-ish months I've spent there. My job mainly consists of lots of loping, therapy (magnawave & theraplate), and rolling white polos (they are the death of me). However, I recently have started stepping into the show ring as well. We have 38 (?) horses in the barn ages 2-16 and more outside in pastures. All horses in the barn are highly bred cowhorses some of which have won't over $100,000 in their careers. While they're all amazing I have my favorites, those being Laneys Gotta Player (Spike), Smart Abbey Rey (Cupcake), PRF Baby's Rockin (Alice) and Catmerize (Virgil). - Virgil is the horse that I have been showing. We have only gone to 3 shows so far 2 of which weren't great but we did pull a check at our second show (which was also only my 4th time on cows!). The environment at these shows are out of this world, such a great change from the toxicity of the English industry. Everyone has been so encouraging and helpful and I cannot thank the team of turnback men in the pen with me for being so incredibly helpful. Anyway... pictures!

*internal and external screaming* this is a world I'd love to get into. I do a lot of cattle work; moving, mustering, wild cattle work, drafting weaners, and just cutting out in general, whether it be paddock or yard. I Campdraft (when it isn't raining or when Covid hasn't ruined our fun), Challenge (which sometimes has a cattle element) and show. I fully intend to at least try cutting at some point in the next few years, and may even venture more towards RCH (Which for me is basically very similar to Challenge, but like...burrrrr) So please excuse me whilst I subscribe to this post and demand updates on your journey because this makes my lil cowpony heart happy! 💖

Ahhhh! So glad to hear there is someone else who loves cattle work on here! You should totally try cutting, even if you have a horse that will cut a cow with *some* style you can enter in weekend shows and do the 2000 limit rider any horse (less competitive and easier to place and win money haha). I would totally try the RCH but I am SUCH a chicken about going down the fence😭 I watch it though, I travel to Fort Worth where they have the big events for cutting and RCH and spend a few days up there watching. It's so so so much fun! We have horses competing at the Non-Pro + Open in Ardmore, OK for the next week and after that we have NCHA Weekend next week!

We've recently had an outbreak of both Strangles and Rhinovirus in the barn. Only 10 of the horses have been affected and are being quarantined. We gave everyone else a week to show symptoms and the NCHA approved us to go to Ardmore for The Non-Pro. We do have some sick ponies at home though

This looks awesome! I'm from England and have ridden English all my life, but I'm currently looking to learn to ride Western and train my Appy X to do some barrel racing and hopefully work cows - he's currently terrified of them so will need a little desensitisation first 😆
