once you know what works for you it's a great way to make money. But everyone has their own system I guess, so I am not going to say that what works for me will work for everyone else. Also I think there's nothing wrong with starting with your own foals, training them up and entering them at level 1. Many people experienced in showing claim that there is no money to be made if showing under level 3 - but they forget that they were newbies too and sometimes buying already trained horses which have just leveled up and will show poorly, then entering them and losing money will put off some people from showing which would have happily continued to evolve if they had just grown into showing with their own level 1 stock - small profit is profit too and makes you ready for the bigger goals!

PEEs at least make great show mares and a pretty neat for breeding up. I love to try those with my WWE/WEW boys.

NO FR, everytime i get something pretty the ratings are SO awful that i end up just free ranging. Granted ive kept a few exceptional ones for myself but I’m stuck in pee combo hell

I can't seem to get past WWE combos no matter what I do. I can still use those as long as they are pretty, but if I try a colour AD combo and get an EWW buckskin I'm really mad. Ugly mugs!

Tbf though I’ve been having poor luck with my stallion for a while as is, haven’t had any W’s born for like 2/3 months?

Honestly it’s crazy, never had luck with brindles honestly but hey not complaining, just a shame about their ratings

I also had a freshie last month give me 2 brindles almost in a row (I think there was one non-brindle in between)

that's why I never keep breeding stock in pastures - and even the 2 year old sale horses that might be in there l learned to sort out by mares and colts before they turn 3. Learned that the hard way!

nope he is just a shitty EEE :( if he made his way into a barn I would understand, as they shift to the next one if the incoming one is full - but there is no way for him to get into the pastures 😭 plenty of barns he could’ve made his way through and I’d never manually put him in there

oh darn, Blaze that sucks! and his bravery probably isn't something to write home about I guess?

oof I am so shitty, a random EEE stallion somehow appeared in my WC bravery mare barn and literally bred to 11 of them... I’m going to cry

This is something I don't think I've ever seen anyone on HEE talk about being involved in, so I figured I would highlight my budding career as a cutter.
If you've followed my other forum topics before you'd know I've mostly ridden jumpers or eventing horses for majority of my life, however, I had the opportunity to take a job at a cutting horse barn last September and ever since I have become completely enthralled with it.
I work for a barn in Texas under a professional rider (can't share names because it would reveal my place of work) and an awesome team of coworkers and clientele. They have become my family in the past 10-ish months I've spent there. My job mainly consists of lots of loping, therapy (magnawave & theraplate), and rolling white polos (they are the death of me). However, I recently have started stepping into the show ring as well.
We have 38 (?) horses in the barn ages 2-16 and more outside in pastures. All horses in the barn are highly bred cowhorses some of which have won't over $100,000 in their careers. While they're all amazing I have my favorites, those being Laneys Gotta Player (Spike), Smart Abbey Rey (Cupcake), PRF Baby's Rockin (Alice) and Catmerize (Virgil).
-
Virgil is the horse that I have been showing. We have only gone to 3 shows so far 2 of which weren't great but we did pull a check at our second show (which was also only my 4th time on cows!). The environment at these shows are out of this world, such a great change from the toxicity of the English industry. Everyone has been so encouraging and helpful and I cannot thank the team of turnback men in the pen with me for being so incredibly helpful.
Anyway... pictures!

*internal and external screaming* this is a world I'd love to get into.
I do a lot of cattle work; moving, mustering, wild cattle work, drafting weaners, and just cutting out in general, whether it be paddock or yard.
I Campdraft (when it isn't raining or when Covid hasn't ruined our fun), Challenge (which sometimes has a cattle element) and show. I fully intend to at least try cutting at some point in the next few years, and may even venture more towards RCH (Which for me is basically very similar to Challenge, but like...burrrrr)
So please excuse me whilst I subscribe to this post and demand updates on your journey because this makes my lil cowpony heart happy! 💖

Ahhhh! So glad to hear there is someone else who loves cattle work on here! You should totally try cutting, even if you have a horse that will cut a cow with *some* style you can enter in weekend shows and do the 2000 limit rider any horse (less competitive and easier to place and win money haha). I would totally try the RCH but I am SUCH a chicken about going down the fence😭 I watch it though, I travel to Fort Worth where they have the big events for cutting and RCH and spend a few days up there watching. It's so so so much fun!
We have horses competing at the Non-Pro + Open in Ardmore, OK for the next week and after that we have NCHA Weekend next week!

We've recently had an outbreak of both Strangles and Rhinovirus in the barn. Only 10 of the horses have been affected and are being quarantined. We gave everyone else a week to show symptoms and the NCHA approved us to go to Ardmore for The Non-Pro. We do have some sick ponies at home though

This looks awesome! I'm from England and have ridden English all my life, but I'm currently looking to learn to ride Western and train my Appy X to do some barrel racing and hopefully work cows - he's currently terrified of them so will need a little desensitisation first 😆
