I just got a new horse named Copper!! I am wondering what his base coat is. His legs are not black at all, just a dark reddish brown that makes me think chestnut. But his mane and tail look very black to me, like a bay dun. He also looks very different depending on the lighting but here are some photos: https://postimg.cc/gallery/8Dpyx73 Edited at November 6, 2024 08:38 AM by Serenity Stables

Since the legs aren't black it has to be Red dun! But that's really neat that his hair is so dark! I haven't seen that before

hmmm, I'm kinda leaning toward bay dun, partly because of the dark mane and tail, and partly because of the darker brown on his ears and face. by the way, that is one fine-looking fella, is he a QH? *-*

I would second bay dun. If he is papered - do you know his registered name and have a clue what color his sire and dam have been?

Thank you! Yes he is QH! Kuewi knn stable said: I would second bay dun. If he is papered - do you know his registered name and have a clue what color his sire and dam have been?
I'm sure he had papers at some point that have been lost, he did reining but has gone though multiple owners. When he gets his fall shots I am going to see if he has a microchip that could help me figure out where he came from originally Alies Stable said: How old is he ? Wow that's a gorgeous dorsal stripe ! At 15 yo his coat is mature so I can say 100% Red Dun. The legs would absolutely have some black on them if he was Bay Dun. The dark mane is maybe some sooty. I guess you can say Dark Red Dun or Red Dun Sooty. Even wild bai dun would have a lil bit of black on the extremities (wild variant limit the amount of black in bay based coat, you can look for it) He would also have some black on the edge of his ears. On young horse, the black can take some time to show but at 15 yo, it would be there. That's a very beautiful boy ! Congrats :)
