Switching tenses (especially if it happens frequently and without a clear reason) can really throw your reader off. One book I read was in past tense for about half the book and then switched to present tense without warning or reason. I was completely jolted out of the book and could not get back "in" to the story no matter how hard I tried. I write a lot and I tend to use first person present tense. So when I'm trying to write something outside of my normal writing style I sometimes end up swapping tenses and having to go back and correct it. It's not that big of a deal, just make sure you establish consistency- if you are going to switch, there should also be a difference in either the character speaking or the setting they're in- like flashbacks. If you ever need someone to just go over your writing and do minor corrections, I'd be happy to help! |

Oh I meant switching between past tense "Said/did/___ed" and present tense "says/does/___s". Though switching between first and third person can also be disorienting lol |
