and if you DO have to send the dog...START RECORDING. i cannot emphasize it enough. start. recording.

that recording has the potential to save your dog from walking the bridge.
if authorities see that the dog was under FULL CONTROL and you were only defending yourself, they will let your dog off the (mostly) hook with some reprecussions. you might have some strings attached but you and your dog will not be in deep shit.
