Name: Sage Acker Age: 20 years Gender: Male Appearance: Long and thick black hair that ends at around his waist, normally done in an elaborate style. His eyes are a striking olive green color, and his skin is a dark tan. He has some scars on his back from various incidents, as well as a scar on his right cheek from a dagger years ago. He has various tattoos as well (the most noticeable ones are a dragon behind his left ear and a tribal sort of tattoo sleeve on his right arm), along with plenty of piercings (mainly his ears, but he does have a lip ring in the center of his lower lip as well). His build is slim but athletic, and while he's fairly short (about 5’3”) he can hold his own in a fight (in fact he was one of the best fighters in terms of hand to hand combat their military unit had for years). He wears a simple tunic and combat styled pants/boots most often; he knows to always be prepared to face off with a mythical creature. He normally also has other jewelry, including a small choker necklace that's made of native beads. Personality: Sage is pretty cautious/untrusting, and outwardly he shows the traits drilled into him by his village's leaders - he is quiet, and keeps his head down, though when fighting he puts on a bolder front. He doesn't really fight back any more against the village leaders, since being submissive has normally gotten him better responses than otherwise. After years of forced servitude, he resembles a typical well trained servant, broken and willing to do as asked. Once he's free of those burdens, though, he does have a sense of humor and tends to be sarcastic. He's fairly quick to anger, though over the years he's learned to control his temper well and keep a good poker face and fake a smile and a flirt. At heart, he is a fighter - stubborn, sarcastic, and the more you beat him down the harder he'll fight back ...until he can't anymore. He is extremely loyal, so once someone earns his trust, he becomes quite attached, and is loyal even up to the point of self sacrifice.

Alright bear with if some of this is barely along the lines of vampire technicality, i really have to make stuff up to go along lol) - Name: Elara Holston Age: 20 (Age she died, im thinking she could have been recently turned intead of being centuries old etc? Seeing as the village exists in a time vampires ARE being turned, not just living there) Gender: Female - Appearance: Elara stands at around 5'5, though her slim build often has her looking taller at a glance. Her hair is a soft black, tinting a dark blue in some lighting, and stops just above her waistline, pin straight. Her skin is a stark contrast to her dark her, being fairly pale, and it had been throughout her human life too which was usually the topic of conversation when people first met her. Despite her form, her facial features were incredibly soft, and it gave her a constant shy, guarded look - which she was. The only thing even remotely sharp about her appearance, were her eyes. They were a bright, striking icy blue, easy to notice from far away. Oh, and her teeth. Her teeth were bright white, with small fangs that were constantly down. She was a new vampire, that wasnt in her control. Elara doesn't have many scars, though she does have two tiny red dots on her neck, about an inch apart from each other - very telling to someone who has good eyesight, but it usually goes unnoticed. Which makes it easier for her to pass as human. Despite her form, she still wears jewelry, a thin silver necklace with an intricate design that she never vowed to take off, and a bracelet with the exact same. - Personality: Elara fits the way she looks well, almost the exact same. She's very guarded, very wary of people, has been her whole human life, and seemingly now for the rest of eternity too. She grew up with parents that preferred to keep her hidden due to the fact she wasn't the son her father desparately wanted, and that did absolutely nothing for her confidence growing up. Confrontation and fighting was not her thing - not ideal for someone that survives off blood for the rest of the coming years. Still though, that doesnt mean she cant be determined. If she has to do something, she's able to push away her fear of confrontation, and get it done. But only if times are desperate. Until then, she'll keep herself to herself. She's also fairly good at lying, to most people anyway. Well, she has to be given the fact she has to be able to pass off as a healthy, alive human being if she was to ever step foot in the village. - - I hope this is good? If there's anything i need to add/change let me know :)

Sage slipped out of the old shack he had been living in quietly, careful not to wake his father or you get sister. There was no need for them to wake up - and even if they did, his father would get incredibly mad. He'd rather avoid that, if at all possible. Luckily, the man was pretty heavily drunk each night, which meant he'd be somewhat hard to wake up, if luck was on Sages side. It normally wasn't....so he was careful to be quiet. He had no desire to get beat up, be late to work, and need to work injured. He felt gross enough as is waking up this early. However, they needed to eat, and in order to do that he had to hunt. That was his job - one assigned to him by the village elders. There were only three of them, these hunters, and between them they were required to get enough meat for the entire village. If they failed to do so, their rations were revoked until they could catch up. If they ate something they caught by themselves, and didn't bring it back to be split among the people, they'd not only have rations removed but they'd be publicly flogged and locked up for a certain amount of time, before needing to catch back up. That meant hunting even more....and without food one could only do so much or carry so much meat back home. The village leaders didn't care, though, and instead they feasted while their people worked. They always seemed to have plenty - riches beyond what the rest of them could even imagine having. No one was paid for their work - it was considered payment to be fed and housed. A glance back at his shack could tell anyone that thos wasn't great shelter though - it was small, far too small for three people. The roof leaked all over the place, the door was barely on its hinges. There were holes in the walls where the wood had rotten and fallen off, or crumbled away. They were lucky it was even still standing, if he was being honest. It didn't do much against the elements, but it did do some, so he was grateful. They could have been without. He walked briskly to the center of the town, where his supplies awaited him in the hunters lockers. It wasn't much - a knife on a belt, and a bow with a quiver of half decent arrows that always flew slightly to the right when released. He'd learned to account for that, though the wind did play a role in how the arrows flew. He'd have preferred a gun, but none of the villagers could have one of those - only the village leaders had that privilege, along with any other kind of personal weapon. The villagers were kept well under control, with severe punishments for those who broke them. No one usually did. They all knew better - submission meant survival. That was that. He moved into the woods quickly, heading south as the two others went north and east respectively. He crept through the brush as quietly as possible, keeping an eye out for anything that moved. He'd love to get something bigger, like a deer. Even a beaver or something would be nice. Mostly though, he saw squirrels and birds, with some rabbits here and there. He shot those he could, slinging them along into the backpack he had, hoping to find as much as possible. While he moved, he was careful to keep to himself. Not only because of the hunters covered more ground, it meant more prey caught, but because the vampires were a real threat. They looked like people, he knew, and they preyed upon those they could easily overpower. A lone human was easy prey - which was exactly what he was. He didn't see any signs of one though, as he moved, which was certainly a relief. If he was gone, his father and sister would be in bad shape. His sister, at only 12, would have to take up his job. She couldnt do it....which was not a good sign.

Elara dragged her feet along the forest floor, barely paying attention to her surroundings as she did so. Her hair glimmered a soft black to blue in the moonlight, falling over her face and shoulders, settling around her waist like a cape as she stared down at the leaves, her pace unnaturally slow for a human. Well, even slower for a vampire. With it being deep into the forest, the ground was lit up with tiny, almost glowing plants that were barely visible to the human eye, lighting the way out of the deepest parts of the forest, where humans barely ever went. The trees were overgrown, their leaves drooping so far they hit the floor, and the branches on every single one of them reached out into the path as if they were ready to grab you at any time. Which was a popular myth in the village attached, and half of the reason anyone with a sane mind refused to go that deep into the woods. - The village attached to the woods was fairly small, meaning they were somewhat close-knit. If an ancient myth was uncovered, or a new one created, the fear would spread across every inhabitant like a wildire - the trees being alive, one of them. The majority of men there didn't care, though. The poor needed to provide food, after all, and the forest was the perfect place for that. One of the near-recent uncovered findings, were Elara's kind. Vampires. Before, the vampires had been able to keep themselves tucked away well, keep themselves ot themselves and source the blood needed to stay undead without having to venture out the deepest parts of the forest at all, but that had become much more difficult recently. A teenager that had wandered too far in search of the "alive trees," had ended up just by the entrance of the vampire cove, and had been attacked by one of the newer vampires. Luckily for the teenager, he had gotten away, but that was unlucky for Elara's kind. The news spread quickly, a few men had come down to try and check the cove out, and well...the vampires were in danger. A lot of danger. Their primary blood source had been taken away, and it was causing them to have to head up into the village to start finding new ways to eat. That wasnt something any of them wanted to do, but they had no choice. - To Elara, the way the village had treated the vampires was entirely unfair. They were all humans once, and they had been attacked and turned entirely against their will. It was either fight to survive, or let themselves fade away into existence, turning undead into well...dead. Gone, entirely. From the stories Elara had heard, a few of the vampires had given up once the humans found them, starved themselves to the point they entirely faded away, which was an incredibly long, painful experience. She had witnessed it first hand with a girl that was turned at just 18, and had vowed to never let that happen to her - as unhappy as she was with her existence. She was immortal, which meant spending the rest of eternity like this. Sucking the blood out of undeserving people, turning people who would never hurt a fly, have to fight to survive, for as long as the earth continued to spin. And, considering Elara was somewhat new to this...whole thing, she was still having a very hard time getting to grips with it. As you would, really. - Elara's long train of thought was very quickly shut down as she realise she had ventured out the thick of the deep forest, easy to tell by the scenery. No more drooping trees, no more long hanging branches shaped like fingers, no more tiny glowing plants lighting up the way. Now, it was just...regular. Dense trees, boring plants, animals here and there. It was a stark, somewhat ugly transition to where the vampires resided. She quickly stopped and leant herself against a tree, running her tongue along her top teeth in pure habit. She had little control over her fangs and when they descended, which made passing off as a humn very, very difficult. Usually, vampires were able to pass off as real humans somewhat easily. They didnt wear long black cloaks, and have dark red eyes like the majority of books say. Nor id they turn itno bats and fly away. They just looked...regular, for the most part. Just very, very pale. Elara however, had trouble with her fangs. She couldnt keep them up, and she had bee nearly caught out one too many times. - Suddenly, Elara heard footsteps. She could smell the scent of a human befor she could see them, and she peered out from aroun the tree she had been leaning on, immedaitely catching the sight of a figure wandeing through the trees. She felt herself grow hungry immediately, and onc again, her tongue trailed her top teeth, this time catching onto her fangs. It didnt hurt, she couldnt really...feel pain the same way, but it still caught her by surprise. Elara hated hunting humans. She despised it more than anyone would know. It wasnt fair, it wasnt fair that this is what she had to go through just to avoid fading away entirely. This man was surely undeserving. Still, she pushed herself off the tree and carried on walking, hoping that if he did see her before she got to him to attack, he would think she was...human. Just keep the fangs hidden. - - i hope this was okay, my mind went a little blank sob) Edited at July 2, 2026 06:33 PM by Wayside Wilds

(it's all good! It works just fine xD) Sage continued to move through the forest, as quietly as one could. For a human, he was quite good at it....good enough to stalk and kill the animals he was hunting. Of course, to other creatures whose blood thrummed with magic or mythical creatures who had special abilities, he was probably not the best at staying quiet in the first, but he chose not to think about that. He already didn't like the situation he was in, and he didn't need to feel any worse about it. As he moved along, he shot whatever small game he could find, hut kept his eyes peeled for any larger game, or sign that anyone else had been there. He knew he was bordering dangerous woods....but he had to branch out a little bit to catch enough game. The other two hunters were older, and seniority meant picking the spot you wanted to hunt in. One picked the area with larger game, one picked an area with a few nice ponds and lakes with large fish in them, plus other various game. The last section fell to sage. It was scarcer than the others, likely because of whatever was going on with the magic trees and the vampires. Eventually though, he did pick up the tracks of a deer. It was a small one, but even so it would have more meat that rabbits and squirrels, so he set off after it eagerly, arrow already strung and bow held ready on his hands as he moved quickly but quietly through the brush. He came out over a ravine, with a river below him. It was there he saw the buck. He was right, it was small, and somewhat young. But he would bring back enough meat for the day at least....he wouldn't have to worry quite so much about rations for a while. They'd each eat tonight with a catch like that, maybe a few days worth. With that thought, he pulled the string of the bow back, muscles tensing in his back as he paused for a moment, making certain his shot would land. It did. The buck jumped when the arrow hit him, but fell quickly, and sage begun his hike towards it, focused on his prize. Maybe he should have paid more attention to his surroundings while he moved to it, and for the few minutes before shooting it, but he was surprised and happy, and eager to get the meat back home to the village. It was a rare, but very good situation to occur.

For the next five minutes, Elara's eyes were trained on the figure's movements, following everything they did. She didn't move quickly at all, and kept her step light across the leaves underfoot, careful not to step out of place and snap any twigs, or trip over anything. The more Elara followed the figure, the more she swore she could smell the blood, which was only making he hungrier. And albeit slightly light headed, given the fact she hadn't had an actual good meal in a while. Unlike the other vampires, heading up to the village to kill was something Elara swore against, not if she could get her blood from animals. Granted, that was a little...strange, almost unheard of, but it worked. It wasn't the best to feed their forms, but it worked. Anything was better than risking both her life, - in some strange way, - or innocent people's lives. She'd rather stick to feeling a little weak every day. - If there was one thing Elara could count herself even slightly good at, it was self control. Ever since she was turned, which was somewhat recent, the elders in the cove had constantly been otno her about how she was able to hold back from killing, how she wasn't pouncing on and murdering everything in sight. According to them, recently turned vampires - more knwon as newborns, - had little to no self control. They were wild, they didn't think...But Elara was entirely different. In fact, all the girl did was think, about how unfair this all really was, about how she really was stuck like this for eternity. It was cruel. Though, she vowed to never, ever mention to anyone else in the cove how scared she really was to kill an innocent human, drain them of enough blood to keep herself well for ages. Usually, if she really did have to attack a human, she wouldn't attack to drain, just to feed. It wasn't the best way to go, to keep herself fed but...well, no one died at least. If anyone in the cove knew how she felt, well...That wasn't something to think about now. - Only did Elara realise her thoughts had lost her track entirely, when the sound of a shot rang out, averting her attention to that direction. It wasn't a gun shot, but sounded more like a crossbow, or something of the sorts. She had paid enough attention to passing hunters now to know that only select ones seemed to carry an actual gun, and judging by their appearances, they were much more...experienced, perhaps, older. Meaning whoever she had been tracking was at least near the bottom of whatever...chain those humans had. Perfect. - She picked up her pace walking, coming to the bank of a river by a ravine, her gaze immedaitely landing on a small to medium sized animal laying on the ground, then flitting to a figure heading towards it. The same figure she had seen earlier. Despite everything in her screaming to just use her speed to run to the animal, drain that before the human got to it so she didnt have to attack, both how weak she felt and how long she had been tracking the figure told her otherwise. She used her speed - not something she had a lot of yet, given the fact she was new, - to get down to where the figure was heading, her footsteps worryingly light. Her fangs were already descended, and it was clear she was ready as she drew closer and closer. Just think about the food, think about how weak you are, was the one reccuring thought Elara had in her mind as she approached rapidly from behind, her eyes trained on the figure's neck. She appeared right behind him...And stopped. She couldn't do it, no matter how she felt. Every instinct inside her was screaming at her to turn around, run, make sure she doesnt get spotted and just go and find an animal, but strangely, she didnt either. She just stopped. Playing it off as a human now would be virtually impossible, but...Well now she had no choice.

Sage hadn't noticed Elara, at least not directly. Something felt ...off to him, but then again most things did. He was hesitant to just dismiss the nerves - after all they'd saved him on multiple occasions - but he also knew a lot of it was the strain of needing to get all this back to the village. To keep his family fed and happy. Well, as happy as they could be. His father was a useless drunk of a man, but he and his sister got along well. Honestly, she was why he tried so hard. If it was just him, or even just him and his father, he'd have much less motivation to hunt like this. To keep trying his best, no matter what. She brought out the best in him. As he made his way down to his fallen prey, though, his thoughts were broken. It was almost like he was being watched. He found himself slowing down slightly, keeping a quiet eye on his surroundings. If it was a vampire, he knew he'd have little warning, and likely no time to react once he saw them due to their speed, but he wanted to keep an eye out anyway. There were other predators in the forest too - and a downed deer made for easy prey for a cougar or other predator. He didn't really want to tangle with one of those either. He reached the deer without incident though, and he let out a sort of heavy breath of air, shaking his head slightly as he shouldered his bow and took out the knife instead, kneeling beside the buck. Something still felt off though, and all of a sudden the feeling of being watched increased...a lot. He paused, knife hovering above the deer, and turned, not entirely surprised to see a girl standing there. A vampire, he assumed. But....why was she just standing there? She was clearly hungry....he could see it in her face. He knew the look well. So why wasn't she attacking? She could have easily taken him out, if he was being honest with himself. He just stared at her for a moment or so, before shaking his head slightly. "Usually your kind don't just stand around and wait for a meal," he noted, sort of just trying to gauge what she was doing. He didn't know if he was in any danger ...and in close quarters his bow would do no good. But a knife against a vampire wasn't the best defense either. Supernatural speed and strength overpowered a human easily, especially in hand to hand combat. And once they got a bite in, the fight was pretty much over. He knew that much. She had the upper hand....so why was she acting like she didn't? He glanced down at the deer briefly, still warm under his hand. Did she want the deer? He could't hand it over to her. He needed it. But he couldn't imagine what a vampire would need or want a deer for. They didn't eat meat or anything. The blood, maybe, but they preyed on people. He was just ...really confused. "If it's the deer you want, I need the meat. The rest you can have." Of course, the hide would be nice too, with winter approaching....but the meat was most important right now. And if he could make a deal, and get away and out of the situation...that's what he'd do.

The moment the man mentioned "her kind," Elara's expression changed, though she did her best to mask it with that same blank, almost unreadable expression she always wore these days. It was tricky, given the fact she was just...stood there. Staring. Not speaking. Her gaze travelled down to the deer for what felt like the thousandth time, and she could have curse herself out for being so drawn to it. Slowly, she tore her gaze away from the deer and up to the man, her gaze locking straight onto his. "I don't know what you're talking about." Great, well that was a...brilliant defense in response to someone already catching on to what she actually was. Elara shifted from one foot to another, looking away for a second. She had no idea how to play this off, this wasn't in any way shape or form normal. No one else from the cove would have done this, not here or in any other universe. Perhaps she was being a bit too harsh on herself. - As soon as the man mentioned the deer, she shook her head, opening her mouth to ask why he would even think that, but stopped herself. Playing herself off as human now would make her seem like an awful actor in a cheap budget show. It wouldn't work, he was clearly smart. So instead, she just stepped away, as if to show she wasn't intent on attacking him in any way - because she wasn't. "I don't need anything." Was all Elara coud get out of her mouth for a few seconds. She glanced up at the sound of a very faint rustling, immedaitely picking up on the fact this man wasn't alone. Her senses were heighly heightened, the ruslting was clearly nowhere near them at all - but it was clear to her. Her gaze fluttered back to the man. "Fine, I won't pretend i'm...one of you. And that im not hungry," She started, her eye contact heavy. That was one thing she had a habit of, despite her nature. Clear eye contact. "Or that I wasn't...about to attack you, but I won't. Just dont mention me being here to anyone, okay?" - Finally, she had been able to say more than ten words. She clasped her hands together in front of her, suddenly very aware of how she actually looked. She had a regular black top and leggings on, which were quite blood stained. She had two tiny red bite marks on her neck, and the hair nearer to that side was also heavily blood stained. She was sort of...stuck this way, really. It was how she'd died. - - quite short but im still quite busy sorry sob)

(It's all good, im busy too...the basement flooded this week so I'm in the middle of tearing out carpet/drywall/etc and all that jazz ToT) At the girl's comment of trying to play innocent, Sage simply raised an eyebrow. It was pretty clear he didn't believe her, and there really was no way she could convince him otherwise. She looked like a vampire, and she had just appeared out of nowhere. No other humans would be out this far into the forest either...and she didn't live in the village. He'd have recognized her if she was. He frowned slightly when she mentioned she didn't need anything, not entirely buying that either. "Then why are you here," he challenged, crossing his arms over his chest. She did admit as to why, a few moments later, and his face softened slightly. So she was hungry. But then why hadn't she attacked him? She had just...stopped. He didn't understand that. "I won't tell anyone, but you have to promise not to try and attack me again," he noted. "I can give you the blood from the animals I catch too, I don't need it and you do...but in return you don't touch me," he noted. He figured that was a fair trade. He did find himself looking her over - the clothes didn't look super comfortable, nor did the blood on her head. "Do...is that the only outfit you have," he asked witha slight frown. He could probably get her something to change into from the village. It would be more confortable, and wouldn't look quite so bad. And could she not bathe? Why was she still bloody? He had a lot of questins, and not a lot of answers, but he also figured some of his questions were a little...insensitive toward her, so he kept to the basics.
