A modern-day metropolitan city.
Plot: A private investigator is hired to track down a missing person, but he soon discovers that the case is much more complicated than he thought. The missing person is a man with a secret past, and the investigator's search leads him to unexpected places, including a dangerous underworld of organized crime. Along the way, he enlists the help of a hacker who has a personal stake in the case. As they dig deeper, they find themselves entangled in a web of conspiracy, corruption, and unexpected attraction, but the closer they get to the truth, the more dangerous it becomes for both of them.

  • Eye Color: Green
  • Skin Tone: Light olive

  • Notable Features: A confident, easygoing smile that puts people at ease; often seen wearing thin, round glasses for a touch of personality.

Personality Traits:

  • Strengths:
    • Extremely analytical; can read people and situations with acute precision
    • Charming and well-spoken, making it easy to build rapport with clients and witnesses
    • Resilient under pressure, always stays cool in intense situations
    • Empathetic, especially toward people on the fringes of society, such as LGBTQ+ individuals, ex-cons, and sex workers
    • Loyal, with a deep sense of justice that drives him to uncover the truth, no matter the cost
  • Weaknesses:
    • Can be overly skeptical and slow to trust people, even those close to him
    • Prefers to work alone, which sometimes isolates him from help when it's needed
    • Tends to compartmentalize his emotions, making it difficult to maintain personal relationships
    • Has a tendency to bottle up his feelings, especially when it comes to past heartbreaks
  • Hobbies/Interests:
    • Collects old detective novels, often spending his evenings reading Raymond Chandler or Agatha Christie

    • Being outed or judged for his sexuality by his clients or within his profession
    • Getting too emotionally attached to a case, losing sight of the objective
    • Not being able to protect those he loves from harm

Backstory:

  • Early Life:
Elliot grew up in a small, conservative town in Northern California. His father was a cop, and his mother worked as a teacher. The town was not very accepting of those who were "different," and Elliot quickly learned to keep his sexuality a secret. As a teenager, he found solace in books and old movies, gravitating toward detective stories. At 18, he left for college in San Francisco, coming out as gay in a city that was far more accepting. Despite the newfound freedom, the scars of growing up in a conservative environment stayed with him.
  • Motivation for Becoming a PI:
After college, Elliot initially studied law but quickly found that he was more interested in the process of uncovering the truth than the bureaucracy of courtrooms. He became a private investigator in his mid-20s, inspired by the hardboiled detectives he had read about in his youth. As a PI, Elliot thrives on solving complex cases, often working for clients whose lives are in danger or who need protection. He especially enjoys cases that intersect with his values, such as helping LGBTQ+ individuals who have been taken advantage of or discriminated against. Over the years, Elliot has built a reputation for being relentless but compassionate—especially toward clients who are vulnerable or marginalized.

Personal Life:

  • Current Relationship Status:
Single, but open to a relationship—though often too wrapped up in work to make it a priority. Elliot has had a few significant relationships in the past, but they always seemed to fizzle out due to his intense focus on his cases and his emotional walls.
  • Close Friends/Family:
    • Best Friend: Sophie Chen, a tech-savvy former hacker turned legal assistant who helps Elliot with surveillance and tracking. They met when Elliot worked a case involving a missing person, and their partnership became both professional and personal.
    • Estranged Father: Robert Harper, a retired police officer who still doesn’t fully accept Elliot’s sexuality. Their strained relationship is a source of pain for Elliot, though he continues to reach out in the hopes of reconciliation.
    • Younger Brother: Ryan Harper, who is supportive but often feels like an outsider to Elliot’s work, not understanding the danger and secrecy involved. Despite their differences, Ryan remains one of Elliot's few true allies.

Key Relationships:

  • Romantic History:
Elliot's past relationships have been tumultuous, often complicated by his tendency to distance himself emotionally. His most significant ex was Marcus, a fellow investigator, but their breakup occurred after a tragic case where Marcus was killed in the field. This loss deeply affected Elliot, leaving him emotionally scarred and hesitant to get close to anyone again.

River Janssen

River was awoken by his computer pinging endlessly. He yawned, shifting to push himself up, propping himself up against the bed. He whined softly, sitting up fully and running a hair through his sapphire blue hair. He opened an eye, glancing over at his computer monitor, to see Jordan sending endless numbers. Far into the thousands by now. He rolled his eyes. She was doing that thing again. He scooted toward the end of his full-sized bed, shoving himself up. He stretched his arms above his head, stretching out his back. His grey, graphic tee stretched above his boxers, showing a strip of pale skin. He yawned once more, shuddering slightly as he dropped his arms down once more. He walked over to his desk, plopping down in his chair, and putting his hand over his mouse. He pulled up the message thread with Jordan and raised an eyebrow.

Codes17$: [Yeah, yeah, I'm here. What?]

He responded, fingers flying over the keys despite still waking. The message was marked as read immediately and he got a response back.

Hacks30##!: [Hey hey! It only took you 2918 pings to wake from the grave!]

She messaged. River snorted and rolled his eyes. Idiot. He switched away from the thread, going to his open window of Harper's computer. A smile spread over his lips as he typed in a new message for the other male to see that morning.

Codes17$: [Heya Harps! Good morning~ <3]

He sent it, then switched back to Jordan's thread. He ignored the thread for a bit, shoving himself up and out of his chair. River walked over to his closet, grabbing a pair of cargo pants and tugging them on easily. He then shoved off his pajama shirt, throwing it onto his bed. He grabbed a black shirt, pulled it on, and adjusted the graphic tee. Right then. That was good enough. He walked back to his desk and plopped down, looking back at his computer. He clicked on Jordan's thread.

Codes17$: [I'm gonna hop on a game.]

River texted. Pulling on his headphones and clicking on a game. A shooter game, of course. He began playing, biting his lip roughly, eyes darting around the screen. He knew Harp wouldn't see the new morning message until a few hours. So he let Jordan join his game and they began playing, chatting over the voice chat option.

Elliot James Harper leaned back in his worn-out office chair, the hum of the fluorescent light overhead punctuating the silence of his cluttered, dimly lit office. A half-empty glass of whiskey sat on his desk, next to an open file marked Confidential. The case wasn’t anything new—another missing person, another story that would likely end in betrayal or tragedy. But something about it nagged at him, the way a bad gut feeling often does, like a shard of glass lodged just under the skin.

He adjusted his round glasses and stared at the faded photograph clipped to the file. The woman in the picture was younger than him, her eyes wide with fear, a clear sign she was in over her head. The kind of trouble Elliot knew all too well. He ran a hand through his short, wavy hair and exhaled a long breath, his fingers grazing the scar that still marked the edge of his left eyebrow—a reminder of a case gone sideways, a mistake he wouldn’t make again.

The city of San Francisco sprawled below his office window, lights twinkling in the distance. He could hear the distant thrum of nightlife, the faint music from a drag bar a few blocks down, the sort of place he often visited when the weight of his work got too heavy. But tonight, he wasn’t going out. Not yet. He had a job to do, and a promise to keep.

The sharp click of a key turning in the door’s lock broke his thoughts. Sophie, his best friend and the only person who had stuck by him for longer than a few weeks, entered, holding up a small, silver flash drive.

"Got the data you asked for," she said with a grin, her dark eyes lighting up despite the exhaustion in her voice. "This is the stuff you wanted on the missing girl’s boyfriend. I think you might be right about him."

Elliot’s lips twitched into a brief, knowing smile. "I’m always right, Sophie," he said, voice laced with dry humor, though the edge in his tone suggested otherwise. "You know that."

She dropped the flash drive onto his desk with a soft clink. "I know. But sometimes I wish you weren’t." Her tone softened as she glanced at the file. "You sure you want to dive into this one? It’s gonna get ugly. You know how these things end."

Elliot didn’t respond immediately. His eyes lingered on the photo of the missing woman again. He’d been in this business long enough to know how it worked—nothing was ever what it seemed. And those who lived in the margins, those who were used and discarded, were always the ones that called him in the end.

"I’ll handle it," he said finally, his voice low, almost to himself. "I always do."

But as Sophie left the office, Elliot couldn't shake the feeling that this case would be different. And as much as he tried to bury it, a small, unwanted voice whispered in the back of his mind: You can’t keep everyone safe, Harper.

He looked out at the city lights again, wondering if maybe—just maybe—he could prove that wrong.

River Janssen

River shifted back to his monitor that was scrolling through hacks. He saw that Harp hadn't tried to close out the message. Which meant he hadn't seen it. Aw. He hadn't seen it.

[Don't ignore meeeeeee Harps :( ]

He sent it, adding a code string to it to make sure Haprer saw it. he didn't want to be ignored. He hated being ignored. He sat back in his seat, eyes trailing to his window. The curtains and blinds were still closed... he pushed to his feet, shuffling to them and brushing the curtains open, then the blinds. he peered down at the people below, watching the floods of people of all shapes, sizes, heights, and colors. It was so interesting living in such a huge city... Especially with the many people and crimes around... It was insane how much his life had changed in just a year.

He was caught trying to hack into a police station, and had to move to hide his identity, became obsessed with the detective who was assigned his case, and became better at hacking... it was insanity. He turned his back to the view of Times Square out his window, putting his headphones securely on and sitting back down, clicking on his computer, beginning to bring up his code to find the daily passkey for the cameras. Of course in San Francisco, where Harp was. He smiled slightly, biting his lip ring between his teeth as he typed.

He glanced at his third monitor, the one to the right, which had more misc and entertainment things. Like youtube, and Jordan's chat thread. His middle was for hacking and his left monitor was for... obsessing. Just maybe. River glanced at Jordans message at the ping.

Hacks30##!: [Sopie is looking so stunning today, Riv. I'M SO IN LOVE <33333]

She sent, River snorted slightly, fingers pressing against his keys as he typed up a response.

Codes13$: [Stalker]

He turned back to his middle monitor to continue, until Jordan responded fairly quickly.

Hacks30##!: [Like you aren't~]

He huffed, ignoring her message as he continued searching for the passkey to the cameras this morning. He knew Harp knew about him. He didn't know much. Really, only he was a hacker. And was maybe a bit obsessed. But otherwise, he knew nothing else. River propped his head up on his elbow, mind wandering to thoughts of coffee. He should get some... He wanted some. Starbucks™ wasn't far away.

Harper didn’t need to look at his screen to know Codes17$ was up to something. He could feel it, the way Code's energy always crackled through the digital space between them, like static or the low hum of a live wire, begging to be noticed. That message? It was a dead giveaway. Code didn’t do subtle—especially not when he was in the mood for attention. And Harper had learned by now that when Code sent a message like that, it wasn’t just a request. It was a command, wrapped up in a thin layer of playful desperation.

Harper leaned back in his chair, fingers hovering over his keyboard for a moment, resisting the urge to immediately respond. Code hated being ignored—hated it with a burning intensity that, frankly, Harper found kind of endearing. The kid had no filter, no patience for silence. And maybe Harper kind of liked it that way. Code didn’t ask for things the way other people did. No, he demanded them, like he was entitled to them. A soft chuckle slipped past Harper’s lips as he clicked on the message, seeing the code string Code had added. It was like a child throwing a tantrum but with a much more dangerous edge.

He could picture Code now, staring at his screen with that familiar mix of frustration and challenge, lips pressed together in concentration, probably sitting in some dark corner with those headphones on like they were his armor. Harper knew it well, that little ritual.

Code always thought he was so slick with his tricks—getting past firewalls, bypassing security measures—but Harper had long since stopped underestimating the kid. There was something about him, something Harper couldn’t quite put his finger on, that set him apart from the rest. He’d been around hackers long enough to know that Code was no ordinary player in the game. Whoever he was, he was good. Really good.

Harper wasn’t the type to dive too deep into someone’s background, but there was an almost obsessive quality to Code’s work. He was always there, always operating in the background, pulling strings with the kind of finesse that Harper couldn’t help but respect—even if it meant that Harper was often cleaning up after him. The kid liked to keep things mysterious, though. No one really knew who Code was, or where he was. A few people had tried to track him, but so far, Code’s layers of digital protections were enough to keep his identity safe. Harper had his own ways of finding things out, but when it came to Code, even he was often left with more questions than answers.

**[ Don't call me that ]**

River glanced over the message he got back from Harper. He grinned, not responding for a moment. He stood, grabbing his phone and pulling up the message threads on his phone instead. He then grabbed his keys and slipped his feet into some dark blue Crocs. Listen, they were comfortable when he didn't want to put on actual shoes. He messaged Harper back as he grabbed at his keys.

[You're so mean to me, Harp! But no, I won't :3]

River messaged back, smiling at his phone, he slipped out of his apartment and went toward the stairs. He didn't go out enough to get exercise, so he took the stairs from the 6th floor to ground level. He began down said stairs, trotting down them as he waited for a ping back from Harp. He hummed, landing on the bottom level and making his way to the exit. Maybe he should visit Jordan. She lived on the other side of New York City, sadly, but he could just bus over. They could simp and stalk together. He smirked slightly.

He loved annoying Harper, he loved getting the male's reaction to his chaos. I excited him. He loved everything he knew about Harper, not to mention, he had visuals on him almost 24/7, so that made him happy. And Jordan, because he shared the details with her. And she became obsessed with Harper's coworker. Was it a bit creepy and bordering on stalking?... Yeah. But hey, he got to see Harp! So he was quite happy about it. He loved messaging Harp in the morning. It made waking up all the worthwhile. He walked along the streets of NYC, moving towards the Starbucks nearby him.

Harper’s fingers paused for a moment as he read the message, the playful tone unmistakable. Whoever this was always had a way of making him both frustrated and oddly amused. He couldn’t help but grin, even though he had no idea who was behind the texts.
[You're still impossible to deal with. But fine, no more ignoring you… for now.]
He tossed his phone on the desk, leaning back in his chair and glancing out the window. Whoever this person was clearly knew how to push his buttons, and he hated that it worked. He didn’t know why, but there was something about the mystery that kept him coming back. They clearly enjoyed the back-and-forth, and he couldn’t deny that he was starting to as well.
After a few seconds, Harper picked up his phone again and quickly typed out another message, shaking his head with a smirk.
[You know, you really should stop hiding behind that *:3* nonsense. It’s not fooling anyone. Who are you, really?]
He hit send before letting out a quiet sigh.

River slipped into the Starbucks, sighing at the slightly quieter atmosphere of the cafe. He walked up to the counter, waiting for a moment before he finally ordered, speaking to the blonde female at the counter. She took his order and River smiled under the black mask he was wearing. He shoved his hand out of his pocket and paid for his coffee. Yes, he ordered a frappuccino. Yes, he likes them. Sue him. He turned, walking over to a small two-person table and sitting down.

[Sorry, Harps! Can't tell you that~! It'd ruin the point of being anonymous! :D]

He responded, a smile on his lips as he stared down at his phone, sapphire hair falling into his face. Harps was so fun. Even if he was serious and everything, he was so much fun to annoy!! He snickered softly, glancing up from his phone once his name was called. He stood, hurrying over to the counter and grabbing his coffee frappuccino. River took a sip as he walked back over to his table, sitting down and slouching into the chair, dropping his head again and looking over the message thread impatiently.
