The weight of the world had came crashing down upon Laurel's shoulders the moment she'd gotten the news she'd been dreading for weeks. She could still hear the conversation replaying perfectly in her head, the notion only ratcheting her anxiety up another notch or two. - "Miss Vitello. We are sorry to inform you that your father will not be able to safely leave our care any time soon. However, the outstanding balance of his medical bills must be paid in full by the end of the month for him to continue receiving care at this facility. We understand it is an inconvenience, but it is a policy that we cannot break. Again, you have until the end of the month to produce the funds. Thank you." - All banks and financial aid had denied her, saying either she didn't make enough money or that her father "wasn't sick enough" to receive aid. She barely made enough to thrive on her current salary, let alone pay her father's medical bills. She was thousands of dollars in debt and she didn't have a single thing she could do about it. Well, save for one thing.
- Laurel shuddered just thinking about it, her stomach churning as she sat in the office like living room of a building belonging to the last person she'd ever expected to reach out to for help. She had met him once, maybe twice, but hardly ever on good terms. She didn't know anything about him that was helpful, aside from the fact that he was drop dead gorgeous and terrifying as hell. Luca Catalano. Mafia leader. Her last chance.
Laurel had come to beg him for a favor. To beg him to have pity on her and her deathly ill father, the only family she had left. She needed those bills paid, but she knew she couldn't pay them in time before he was kicked out of the hospital and blacklisted from hospitals within miles. So, with the hope that Luca would aid her financially, she sat and waited to be invited to join him so that she could make her plea. She was willing to do anything for the money. Absolutely anything. Her foot tapped nervously against the hardwood flooring, her bottom lip pulled between her teeth and gently chewed until bright pink and slightly puffy. Laurel was exhausted, having been working double shifts back to back in an attempt to make extra cash. Beneath her golden eyes were dark from little sleep and too much stress. She likely looked dreadful, but that was what worry would do to a woman. |

When Laurel heard her name called, she looked up quickly, snapping out of her destructive, panicked thoughts. "Oh, thank you," she said softly, rising from her seat and smoothing down the fabric of the black skirt she wore. She began to head for his office, her heart pounding rougher with each step she took. If he denied her, she wouldn't even begin to know what to do. She didn't have any family who could help or friends who had money to spare. The mafia was truly her last chance. When she reached the door of his office, she paused and took a deep breath before rapping her knuckles against the wood. She waited a small moment before opening the door to reveal herself to Luca. She offered a polite smile, albeit a little weak.
"Mr. Catalano, thank you for seeing me. I apologize for it being so last minute," she greeted him, easing the door shut behind herself. Laurel was a bit timid as she approached, pausing a few paces away from his desk as to not crowd him. |

Laurel flinched at his command but obeyed, taking a seat. She fidgeted nervously, her hands clenching the fabric of her sweater absentmindedly. "W-Well I.." Despite having rehearsed her request in her head, Laurel struggled to get the words out and to remain composed. "I've come to request a f-favor. A big one," she began after a deep breath, her eyes trained on him for as long as she could stand it. "My father is extremely ill and is required to have around the clock medical care. However, I'm drowning in the debt of his bills. The hospital has given me until the end of the month to pay it, otherwise they'll release him from care permanently. I-I don't have that much money, nor have I been able to receive it anywhere else," she explained, praying that she wouldn't cry as she often did when thinking about her situation. "So, what I've come to ask is if you would be willing to help me pay these bills. It is a lot of money, and I'm willing to do anything that you ask in return. I... I-I just can't lose him. He's all I have left." Her voice cracked at the end, her lower lip trembling as she tore her gaze away from his face and blinked a few times in an attempt not to cry. |

As he asked what she had to give him, she looked him in the eyes, despite the way it made her feel so unsettled. "I don't have much to offer, obviously, but I'm willing to work for you to repay my debt. You'd have my unconditional servitude. Or, if you have anything in mind that you'd like to request of me, I'll do it, no matter what it is." She was quite desperate, all but begging at that point. She didn't care how immoral or dangerous his request or work for her would be, she just knew that nothing was too bad for her to deny him. |
