Entry Story for Gaia and Fawn
Gaia: 12 year old, mare, 16 hh, sooty buckskin blanket appy
Fawn: 6 year old, mare, 15 hh, chestnut blanket appy

"Mother!"

Gaia turned her head at the sound of her daughter's voice. The filly had just returned from gathering the necessities needed to get through the storm that was already baring down upon them. The sorrel mare lifted the bundle she carried and Gaia motioned for her to set them down near the back of the cave. Fawn was covered in snow and her muzzle was encrusted with small icicles. Gaia watched as Fawn moved past her, noticing the scars that littered the mare's hind legs. They looked good, less noticable than even a year prior. Gaia glanced back at her own scars, a bit bigger in proportion when compared to Fawn's.

The fire that had claimed their old home had left its mark upon both of them, and not just in the physical sense. It wasn't uncommon for Fawn to still awake in the middle of the night drenched in sweat and breathing heavily from the memories that plagued her. Gaia wasn't much better off but she had only lost a home, unlike Fawn who had lost her mother. The buckskin did her best to comfort the filly in times of distress, but she couldn't protect her from her own mind on nights like those. She herself could still remember the scent of burning hair and the thick smoke that seemed to suffocate them like a blanket. The screams of their fellow horses as they fought to escape their stalls. Gaia knew that herself and Fawn were some of the lucky ones, though scarred in more ways than one, they got out with their lives.

It was during the hard nights that the older mare made herself think of happier times. Her childhood for example. Gaia had grown up the only foal of her year in her small natal band. Her father, from what she could remember, wasn't an overly ambitious stallion and preferred to keep his herd small. Her mother was soft and gentle and never spoke a harsh word. In fact, the only time Gaia can remember her mother even raising her voice was when she would wander a little too far from the group. Her memories of them were a bit fuzzy now but they were enough. When she was about a year old, she wandered a bit too far during the night and before she knew it, she was lost. No amount of calls would lead her back to her family, and every direction she went seemed like the wrong one. It wasn't long before she wandered onto the ranch and the rest was history.

"I know that look. What are you thinking about now?" the familiar voice snapped the older mare out of her thoughts.

"Just memories. How was the gathering? Looks like it's getting worse out there instead of better," Gaia nudged some of the food they had gathered prior to the foul weather towards the young mare and watched as she began to nibble on the dried grasses.

"It is. Getting worse that is, and we have a foot or so of snow on the ground already. I have feeling we aren't going to be leaving home for a while."

"Well we have enough gathered to get us through at least a few days. We will just have to pray that this storm passes over soon."

Gaia watched as Fawn made her way back towards the front of the cave, the entrance having been moved in a few feet by the snow that had blown in and taken up residence. She turned and made to stand beside the young mare, staring out at the whirlwind of white cold.

"Spring cannot come soon enough."

Blue hues settled upon the shadow closing her in. crunch, crunch, crunch. Pinning her audits weakly with each step that seemed to shake her heart. For a moment, she closed her eyes for whatever it was, if it was going to kill her it might as well be now. She held on to the last bit of hope she had as she strugglingly held her breathe. 'wait.. no! I'm no coward' she reminded herself, she would face this head on. She slowly rose her frame as tall as she could muster, her dark blue hues looking onward. She could feel her trembling getting worse as the creature neared, as the wind began to pick up she smelt a small scent, nostrils flared 'wait? is that a horse?' she pondered, audits slowly perking as a calming voice peirced above the winds. She softly gasped as she seen two icy blue hues peering over her, it was a huge horse! She could barely make out the gender as she blinked trying to keep the snow from her eyes. "I... I..." was all she could muster in an answer, she never seen such a huge horse before, any horse for that matter in a long time. Audits stranded to here them speak, 'a cave?' Oh that would be ideal.. she wasn't sure she'd be able to make it but she could try.

Slender frame looked towards her body as she let out a sigh of pitty for herself, teeth bared hard, wincing at the pain as she began to force herself up, weak legs shaking to hold up her thin body in the cold. Snow had formed crystals of ice all over her pelt from what was there that it could cling too. Feeling herself get a bit lighter as more heavy parts of snow fell to the ground. She tried to rasie her frame more to see the horse before her but, she was too weak and too tired to truly try. She wasn't sure if this was a good idea or not but, at this moment she didn't care. She softly sighed, frozen and aching her blues hues travled upon the dark frame "thank you" she weakly muttered as she awaited to follow them through the storm.

Sorry, I fell asleep unintentionally early last night. But on another note, Teo has art now :)

@si, if this is your rustiness, I'm in trouble XD

Teo | 7 Years Old | Stallion | 18H | M: Yuka

As the equine in front of him seemed to fail to come up with words to his questions, Teo only smiled faintly, realizing that answering a bunch of questions was not what she needed to exert her energy towards at the moment. He watched as the smaller mare painfully pulled herself up out of the snow on trembling legs. He reached out his broad muzzle gently touching her frozen pelt to help steady her. Even doing so, he made sure to keep his body planted at a reasonable distance, as to not appear pushy towards her. When she appeared as though she could hold herself, as least for a few moments, he lifted his cranium and breathed in for the scent of the abandoned den he had come from. Everything before them was white as the snow blew in all directions in the wind, obscuring nearly all visibility. “Come this way.” He stated before taking a few, slow steps forward as to not allow himself to disappear from her sight. He stayed relatively close, ready to offer some stability for the mare if she needed it. Thankfully, the cave was not all that far so he felt rather confident she could make it.

.

The entire time he was leading this mare back to his temporary storm shelter, his heart pounded deep within his chest and his gut felt as though it was in knots. In his life, he had made many promises that in the end, he wasn't able to keep, but one he was insistent on not breaking was his promise to never find himself in such situations as he was in with others. He had already proven that he was incapable of protecting or helping anyone, so how on earth did he find himself here with this mare? A deep sigh released from his nostrils as the black opening of the cave became visible and he released those thought for the time being. "It's not that much farther." He reassured the mare as he kept pushing through the wind, trying to use his frame as a sheild for her as best he could. As they broke the seal of the cave entrance, finding themselves under the protection of the rocks from the wind and snow, Teo let another smile take over his features.

Slender audits weakly swivled towards the taller horse, she was so frozen she barely felt his touch, blue hues tried to look once more at her savior but, there was too much wind. She slowly began to follow, hearing their words over the snow, she knew she must be in the presence of a stallion, normally she might have been more werry to follow, let alone speak to another stud. However, she was so exhausted and wasn't much in her right mind. Legs stiffly moved through the snow slipping a few times as she grunted to keep her weight balanced as she followed the stud. She would be glad to be out of the cold. She only prayed soon this storm would all be over.

Dark blue hues stayed squinted at the ground, blankly watching her legs and the stud beside her legs. Soon, she could hear the clicks on stone and soft dirt/hay crunching beneath her. Feeling a sense of warm and being blocked from the winds. She seemed to come out of a daze hearing him speak. Looking towards him, seeing mostly icy blue eyes looking back at her for it was still dark even within the cave. Only thing she could mostly muster to see was their warm breathe dancing between them. She weakly smiled, "thank you.." shaking out her icy coat to try and get what icy residue she could off her, she soon nestled against one side of the caves wall. Legs shaking as she lowered herself with such a hard thud, youd think she would of broken. Pulling her legs in closer as her wet and cold forelock fell over her little frame, she peered out of the cave, watching the storm from now where she laid. She sighed softly to herself wondering about her sisters... her father. Blinking softly, she tried so hard to stay awake for she didnt want to seem rude but soon the poor weak mare drifted off once more into a deep sleep. Wandering if what had just happened was just a dream.

"Don't mention it." Teo stayed towards the entrance of the cave, watching the snow blow around them outside just on the off chance some predator may have chosen to follow them. He kept an audit tipped back in the mare's direction, listening to her as she walked around. He was caught off guard by her loud thud to the ground where he had to physically turn his head in her direction to make sure she was alright. As the night carried on, she drifted off to sleep in their comfortable silence. Teo crept over to where she laid, as silent as could be, and laid the bark he had brought back with them at her side. By her looks, he knew she needed it more than him, plus he was more than capable of finding more for himself in the morning. He frowned at the thought of only being able to provide a filling, but non-nutritious mean for his company. Chastising himself, he had to be reminded that she wasn't supposed to have been here. He was supposed to be alone, keeping everyone around him safe the only way possible for him. The large dark stallion sighed, and returned to his place at the entrance. He brought his frame down gently, tucking his legs snugly against his frame. He quietly groomed himself for a little while before finally falling into a light sleep, himself.
.
The first tinges of the bright colors of dawn danced on the muzzle of the stallion, stirring his massive frame back to life. Blue orbs squinted underneath the radiant glow of the sun as a deep yawn forced his muzzle wide open. As his vision stabilized, he took note how the warmth of the early morning was already beginning to dampen the frozen snow, encouraging it to melt. He was hopeful that perhaps the ground would be nearly thawed by midday. Teo stole a glance back behind him where the mare still slept at this time. He quietly brought himself back up onto all fours and slowly made his way outside the cave, stretching and moving softly in order to bring his body back to life. While there were still some trees with reachable bark on them, Teo opted to try and find something more satisfying for breakfast. His investigating brought him to a small frozen stream that was hidden in the snow, but still visible from the cave. The stallion inspected the stream carefully, then began to break the ice with his front hooves by pounding into it. With his slightly heavy built frame, this task was rather easy. Underneath the ice was green foliage along the very edges of the bank that were frozen in time. Still green from early fall when thing first began to ice over. Teo smiled at this accomplishment and began to eat his fill, though, still considerate to leave the mare some, for when she woke up.

Gaia | 12 years old | Mare | 16H | Sooty buckskin appy | M: Teo
Fawn | 6 years old | Mare | 15H | Chestnut blanket appy

The following morning Gaia was pleased to find the storm had stopped, for the time being at least. It was considerably warmer than the previous day which gave her hope that spring was in fact on its way. She noticed Fawn still sleeping a few feet away and decided she better let her rest; although she would never admit it, Gaia knew going out in the storm had worn the young mare out. The buckskin stood, shook the few dry blades of grass and pieces of moss from her coat, and made her way to the entrance of the cave. With a quick glance back at where her daughter resided, she soon made her way out into the cold, white wonderland.

It always amazed her how the landscape here was so easily and dramatically changed with the turning of the seasons. Right now this valley was covered in a thick blanket of glistening white powder, but in just a few weeks time it would be a verdent green. The naked trees would soon be clothed in rustling green leaves, and hopefully, in later months to follow, fruit. Gaia looked forward to the day that she would be able to sink her teeth into a crisp apple or find a patch of ripe, plump blackberries. She closed her eyes in anticipation and contentment before a brisk wind pulled her back into reality. Water. She needed a drink after avoiding going outside yesterday and while she could munch on the snow, she knew of a creek not too far from the cave where she resided. So with that thought in mind, she made her way onward through the trees.

The snow crunching underhoof would have given her away to any unsuspecting animals currently out and about in the valley, but Gaia wasn't too worried. There were few predators here, and even those that were here weren't likely to challenge an adult equine unless they were truly desperate. Still, Gaia made sure to not let herself get too distracted or unawares. When she reached the creek she did a quick glance about before puncturing the ice with a dark hoof and lowering her head to the crisp, cool waters of the stream. It hadn't been a minute before she heard ice breaking a little further down from her. She lifted her head, droplets of water dripping down her muzzle, and glanced to where she had heard the noise. Sure enough, there was another horse not too far away on the opposite side of the creek; close enough for her to see they were on the taller side but far enough that she couldn't quite tell if it was a mare or stallion. She doubted the horse even knew she was here. Unique coat, she thought before lowering her head again and quenching the rest of her thirst.

When she looked up again, the individual was still there. She went to turn to leave but second guessed. Should she say hello? Should she not? Winter was hard on everyone and she was sure she hadn't seen this horse around, but then again she didn't tend to stray far from their home. Maybe they could use some help? It went wholly against Gaia's nature to ever turn down a stray or someone in need. Best just to check and make sure, and with that she turned and picked her way closer to the stranger. She was sure the crunching of the snow would give her presence away before she got too close but she still decided to move slowly as to not startle them. Once she was close enough, she gave a small smile. "Hello. How're you?"

|Yuka|5yrs|Mare|15hh|

The silver mare laid in the safety of the strange cave, peacefully. Her mind is quiet and everything around her is quiet. No screaming and arguing sisters waking her up at the crack of dawn with their complaining and crazy demands. Slowly as the morning grew onward, her weak legs started to rubble, hooves scraping against the floor of the cave as they stretched. Big yawn soon awakened the mare from her slumber, licking her dry lips as her nostrils flared taking in the musky scents of the cave. Deep blue hues slowly began to open, her vision becoming less blurred by the seconds. Slender frame slowly rose, she could feel her body aching from the night she had endured. For a moment, she didn’t quite realize where she was. She couldn’t smell the scents of her sisters or father. Only that of a stud. She glanced behind her, there was nothing there but emptiness surrounding her. She slowly felt her heart beginning to race. Last night… Was that really real!? Furrowing her brows as she was deep in thought. She gasped softly to herself. This was no dream, she truly did meet a stranger last night, and she in fact did come home with him. Taking a deep breath, almost wanting to curse herself but, then she did have to admit would she even still be here… be alive if it wasn’t for him? She pondered softly, going back and forth, arguing with herself in her head. The least she could do is thank him, once more.

The young mare glanced at her body, oh lord she looked as if the grim reaper had claimed her. She sighed, if she could make it to spring, she knew her body would fill out once again and hopefully she could go back to looking healthy. She knew that next winter, this would not happen again. She would be prepared for the worst, to prepare her family…”my family” she whispered to herself, “if they even want me back” she sighed. Audits pinned softly, seeing something in the corner of her eye she turned her frame once more. ‘Bark?’ Hues softly lit up at the fact there was food next to her, no it wasn’t as great as an apple or sweet grass but, it was something. Feeling her mouth trying to salivate, she quietly munched on the bark, savoring each piece that roughly slid down her throat. She was very weak and needed to eat anything she could find. Did the stallion she met leave this for her? She wondered why as she finished her last bite. Raising a brow, she wondered if he was even still around. The only thing she could remember was his icy blue hues.

Struggling some as she lifted herself from the cave’s floor, shaking what little of hay that stuck to her belly and legs with a low grunt. She wondered if water was nearby? She pondered what she could say to her savior. Should she just say another thank you then leave…. Or maybe leave without saying anything at all. Just vanish like a ghost. She wondered if she should go back to check on her family, she felt the urge too but wondered if they even made it through last night themselves. Did she want to know? That was the true question of it all. Parts of her really didn’t want to feel guilty for having a slight urge of not wanting too. Another sigh escaped her lips, swishing her tangled plumage that dangled right at her back ankles. She hoped it wasn't too far from home. Nearing the entrance of the cave as the sun rays danced upon her, she smiled seeing that the snow was starting to melt away. She felt the tightness in her chest relax some at the view. Oh how good the sun felt, there was still a chill in the air but, it was nothing compared to last night. She stood there soaking in the sun as if it would never come back again the next day. Audit flicked, when she saw movement in the corner of her eyes. Blue orbs soon landed on a very tall stallion drinking from the river. She couldn’t hear the water due to it being iced over but, seeing as he was drinking, the ice must have been thin enough to crack. She stood quietly, observing and watching him. He didn’t look dangerous or mean.. But then again how can you tell from looks. She has seen her fair share of mean studs and besides not every one would be nice like her father, though her father wasn’t much a fighter or protector. Rolling her hues at the thought of her sire.

She figured he was just a plain black horse, from her view she could only see his black rump and two tones plumage swaying behind him. She took a small step forward still trying to figure out her plan when she noticed another horse approaching the stallion. She couldn’t tell if it was a mare or a stallion. Perhaps it was a friend or a lover? Maybe a mate? Or maybe a challenger and if that was the case, Yuka wasn’t about to hang around. She contemplated as she weakly shifted on her front hooves back and forth before taking a step back into the cave. Maybe if she wasn’t seen she’d be safe? Snorting softly to herself, she lowered her frame, audits in alert. ‘You should just go!’ her mind screamed ‘but you are sooo very thirsty’ another part of her mind reminded her. She felt a very dry gulp get stuck in her throat as she tried to swallow. For now, she’d watch to see if this was going to be a good greeting or a bad one.

If ya want, I could help with that! :)
Teo | 7 Years Old | Stallion | 18H | M: Gaia & Yuka
.
Teo had been completely oblivious to the other equine upstream. He was too lost in his own thoughts. With everything melting around him, he felt is was enough time for him to return back down the mountainside and find his normal territoy near the shoreline. The thought of the cool breeze blowing through his plummage and the radiant sun warming his pelt to be exhilerating. Bluegrass grew so plantiful on the coastal plains and it just so happened to be his favorite. And if he dared to get crazy, he could always bust one of the fallen coconuts underneath his weight for a sweet and refreshing treat. The imagery sounded like perfect paradise. However, he soon remembered the mare he had sleeping back at the cave. What was to come of her? Would she go back off on her own once she was well enough? He couldn't help but notice her ribby appearance as the light filering into the cave outlined her form in the darkness. Maybe she had seperated from a herd and all he had to do was help her back and then he would be alone once again. He plucked more grass as he entertained the thought. Footsteps close by brought the stallion out of his thoughts as he turned his head to find another equine. He paused, taking in her dappled appearance. He was so caught off guard by how many horses he was running into on this once desolate mountain - or so he had assumed. "Uh, hi." He answered after quickly swallowing what food had remained in his mouth. He lowered his head and flexed his audits back in a submissive mannor, trying to make his towering frame less intimidating. "I'm well," he answered rather suprised she would ask. "And you? Are you alright all the wy out here?" He teased the thought of learning how she had managed to stay this far north. Again, he had never seen another soul this far up, in years. Well, aside from yesterday, and apparently today.
.
As he stood there, another scent began to tickle in his nostrils. It was faint and familair. Teo turned his borad head slightly to see a figure in the corner of his eye. The mare from last night! He exchanged a small, faint smile and a gentle greeting towards her, however it was short lived as he turned his attention back towards the mare in front of him. He wondered if the silver mare would join them at the stream, knowing she'd had to have been thirsty, or much rather, hungry.

The malnorished mare silently watched the two equines exchange words, it seemed to be going well. She felt a calmness over her as her alerted audits relaxed. Perhaps, they did know eachother, she thought. Turning her frame to get an itch on her side, she noticed the stallion peering back at her, slender audits tingled at his calling. A big gulp seemed to struggle it's way down her throat as her orbs quickly looked over his black frame, which shown his white marks. Taken a bit by surprise but more shocked that she had been caught spying, she quickly darted herself into the shadows of the cave. 'oh how embarassing' she hissed at herself, pinning her audits at her failed attempt to sus out the situation at the river. Letting out a big sigh, as she opened her orbs once more. Well, nothing more the poor mare could do now but, show herself.

Feeling her tummy rumble and the desprate need to get a drink drove her from the protection of the cave. The sun hitting her body as she now stood completely in the open. Audits swilved as she looked around, nothing here looked familiar. Nostrils flared taking in the frosty scent of the day as it filled her lungs with a cold tightness. She slowly made her way to the river, yet she made sure to put a little space between herself and the two others. Keeping her frame low, her muzzle softly touching the melting snow where only stray of pressed down grass could be seen. Nothing, that looked like she'd be able to eat. Blue hues looked down the river a ways, she defentinely was really far from home, that snow storm really had her turned all around and lost. A bit of panic began to brew within the mare as she quickened her steps to the river.

Closing her orbs, she really hoped she wasn't getting stared down, she wasn't one to enjoy much attention, mainly for the fact her other sisters always were the ones to soak it all up from anyone they met. Looking down she could see her reflection in the ice, she swished her tail nervously as she tried to pull herself away, oh how she hated looking at herself, especailly in the poor state she was in. She quietly huffed to herself as she placed a hoof on the ice, she grunted softly as she struggled to break it. Pinning her audits angry with herself, how she hated how weak she had become, nothing but skin and bones and boney hips and ribs to show for it. Lowering her muzzle again to smell the ice as her warm breathe fogged upon it.

She pondered the thought if she could lick it away, perhaps she could get some satisfaction from that. But oh how she was wrong. As her dry tongue connected with the ice, it was still not unfrozen enough to be licked away as she went to lift her frame, she quickly felt the stinging pain of it being stuck to the ice. Letting out a small squeal trying not to embarrass herself again, she snorted as she thrashed a hoof towards the ice. A rush of cold soon shocked her skinned body releasing her tongue free from the ice. Smiling satisified she pulled her hoof out. Lowering her frame into the liquid she began to quickly quinch her thirst, almost so quick a few times the mare forgot to stop and allow herself to breathe. Oh, how it was nice to have her tongue wet again, to feel the coldness of the water hitting her like a hard kick to the gut, she snorted contently, ignoring the fact that her right ankel was slightly bleeding from being cut from the ice, her plumage swishing calmingly behind her.

It seemed like the boned mare had been drinking for hours, but yet only a few mintues in reality she slowly lifted her frame to catch her breath, her blue orbs lazily travled towards the other nearby horses. Audits softly perked, as her eyes travled over the stallion, the different colors that seemed to shine over his coat, she's never seen anything like it, she knew if her older sister, Yuni, was here she wouldn't of wasted any time throwing herself at this stud. She rolled her eyes playfully with a chuckle at herself, the thought of her sister. But then she began to notice the other was a very pretty buckskinned mare speaking to the stud on the other side of the river. She seemed thick and in good health, much like the stud. She looked at how the sun glowed off the appaloosa with ease. 'what a pretty mate he has' she thought for a moment. Yuka pinned her audits some shyly and insecure as she torn her eyes away from them, she didn't really want others to see how bad off she had it, but she wasn't going to let them pity her that was for sure. Taking in a deep breathe, she figured she'd thank the stallion and move on. Giving her coat a small shake, she slowly began to make her way over to them.

Gaia watched as the young mare made her way towards them. The poor thing was skin and bones, Obviously not from around here. At least during the winter season. The buckskin watched as the silver mare slowly picked her way to the creek but couldn't help the small snort of laughter that escaped when she watched the filly get her tongue stuck. She then turned her attention back to the stallion.

"I very well should hope so. My daughter and I have lived here for the last few years," she gave the male a smile and gently flicked her tail against her flanks. "But we are well. Thank you for asking." Gaia turned her attention back to the filly, a frown coming over her features at the state of her. She moved closer to the filly not wanting to startle her; poor thing looked like a frightened rabbit and Gaia figured she might bolt like one given the chance.

While vastly different in appearance, she couldn't help but draw comparisons to Fawn. The mare was about the same height but was in no way in the same condition. Her daughter had learned, just as she had, that winter was no time for mistakes to be made. Preparation was your best friend when it came to the harsh cold and this filly didn't look as if she had had a good meal in weeks.

"Miss, are you okay? Pardon my curiosity but you don't seem like you're from around here. Do have family nearby? Or a herd per chance?" She glanced back at the stud, but then turned her attention back to the filly. She was awaiting an answer when a familiar voice hit her slim audits.

"Mother?" Gaia's head swiveled and she caught sight of the sorrel filly standing not too far from them. She had a questioning look on her features but when she deemed there was no danger she moved forward. She made her way to stand beside her mother, her coat barely brushing against the buckskin's. Her fiery red coat was a stark change to the white landscape that surrounded them, and Gaia was glad of the comfort it brought. "Who's your company?"

Gaia went to speak but then realized she had not asked either horse's name. She shook her head before releasing a light chuckle. "I am afraid that I am as curious as you are my dear," she turned from the mare to the stallion once more. "Pray tell, what are your names?"
