Mari cocked her head at him curiously when he exclaimed that it was a good story... well, she was certainly up for a good story. She assumed most of his scars would have stories... but the truth was they all had the same story. His dad, the tavern, on the streets... so one that had a more... exciting story was interesting to think about. She cocked her head at him... she did remember the queen panicking about the princess being missing... the whole kingdom was in panic. And the surrounding ones, too. She and a few other maids had been dragged out to accompany the queen while she searched about for her daughter, but she wasn't aware that Sage was involved in that story. From what she'd heard, it'd been quite awful for all of them. She cocked her head at him when he mentioned the small space... was that an issue for him? She recalled him saying he was put in a small space as a punishment when he was with his father. And why was there so much she didn't know about her husband? She sighed and nodded to him. "That is a story," she mused lightly to him before shaking her head. It was a little bit amusing, she had to say... well, this whole thing wasn't amusing, it was probably very traumatic for him, but the fact that he was able to chuckle about it had caught her off guard. She then cocked her head. "It still hurts?" She asked curiously, the thumb that was gently trailing over it kind of starting to press into the area a bit, as though she was feeling for anything wrong. "How long ago was this?" She murmured quietly, a more concentrated expression across her face, like she wa seeing to a patient or something, though had to register that she was actually with her husbsnd for a moment, a kind of sheepish chuckle escaping her. She then pouted at him. "If you stop kicking people you'd be in better shape," she mused lightly to him.

Sage hummed in agreement to the girl, amusement still written on his face. "It definitely is," he chuckled lightly, shaking his head slightly. He couldn't help but be amused by the girl going into doctor mode....feeling the wound, asking questions about it, that sort of thing. "maybe five years ago," he mused. "More or less." Though, at her sheepish chuckle, he grinned over at her and pecked her forehead. "Maybe you should work in the ward instead of with the queen," he teased her lightly. "Its not so bad," he added on, really just to reassure her he was alright. "Pains me a bit, but only if I use it too much or move my arm a certain way," he explained with a shrug. He snorted out a laugh at her last comment, rolling his eyes slightly. "Brilliant deduction," he laughed. "You're definitely doctor material already," he teased lightly.

Mari hummed softly to him before pouting. "It shouldn't be hurting after so long, though," she huffed quietly to him. "Did it hit a bone, though?" She asked with a cocked head. "Or your joint," it looked like it was just below the actual shoulder socket... but there was a chance that the bullet had hit an odd angle. She was still surprised about how little she actually knew about her husband... well, there were a few things she'd never told him. But, she hadn't told him those things from the start for a reason, so he didn't need to know unless he asked, because there was no way she was going to drive him off with a shitty childhood. "I make twice as much with the queen as I did with the doctor," she mused lightly before shaking her head. "And I think we'd get bored of eachother if we were there," she chuckled once more. "Unless you want to pay for me to learn how to be a real doctor, I can't see it happening," she mused lightly. Though, she had to say, she rather liked that idea... but it was a lot of money, and money they didn't have. She snorted at his next comment, thought. "I know, right?"She scanned over him a little bit, looking for more scars to ask about... ones that might have had a story about them. Of course, she could absolutely make this more playful, but that could wait a little bit. "Okay... and what about this," she asked, taking his hands and pointing to the what looked like rope scars around his wrist.

Sage wrinkled his nose and shrugged in response to her question. "Maybe?" He hummed lightly and gave her a sheepish smile. "I was focused on not passing out at the time....I just yanked the bullet out," he admitted. "But it doesn't bother me often, so I guess it really doesn't matter," he chirped. Then he snorted in amusement at her other comments. "Doesn't make much sense....you do half as much work with the queen and get paid double," he mused lightly. He didn't mind....if she made more money that was good for their little family....but it was all so odd to him. He glanced down at his wrists when she took them, and shrugged again. "That would be layers or ropes and belts and chains and whatever else I've been tied up, held onto, held still, or chained up with," he mused. "Between the tavern and dad and guards I've pissed off before I came here and the time Anya and I got kidnapped for the second time, I'm not entirely sure which one is most prominent," he hummed. "The most recent one was when we got kidnapped. They thought I was Luther, I guess, and me being me ripped my wrists open to the bone trying to get out," he huffed. He still had a twinge of amusement in his voice towards the end....he should know better than to act like that, but nope. Not him. He was stubborn that way. "I met you a few months into them healing," he added.

Mari huffed out a breath to him before shaking her head softly. "God, Sage. Next time you get shot or stabbed or... something, don't take it out until the doctor is with you," she snickered before rolling her eyes. "You're lucky you didn't bleed to death, or get an infection, because we both know your hands wouldn't have been clean!" She told him with a bit of a chuckle. She then wrinkled her nose. "Actually, I didnt do too much with the doctor... I basically have to do everything for the queen. Washing, cooking, I have to go away with her to other kingdoms sometimes, too. I have to help her sign things, and wash, and... literally everything," she huffed to him. "From five in the morning to seven at night during the week," she then added with a pout. "I do work quite hard you know... my job isn't easy," she then added quietly. She looked towards his hands again, her thumb rubbing gently over the scars. "They used those on you in the tavern?" She asked, looking rather... bewildered. It was bad enough that he had to be in there with anyone... it wasn't just sex the workers were used for, it was literally everything... the fact the owner allowed ropes and chins and things in there at all was absolutely horrifying. She nodded quietly to him, her brows slightly furrowed. "Yeah, I do remember that," she huffed quietly to him.

Sage chuckled lightly and nodded. "It helps that I have a doctor now," he mused. "Most of this happened before I knew him," he admitted with a shrug. Then he hummed lightly at her slight complaint about hard work and nodded. "I know, I know," he chuckled lightly. "But it's not super physical work, is what I was going for I guess," he thought out loud. It didn't really matter, he supposed. Then, at her question, he wrinkled his nose and hugged out a light breath. "the tavern owner was nasty, but the.... customers...were mostly the ones who used the ropes and stuff," he admitted. "The tavern owners worst weapon was his fist. Or the broom or belt. Whichever he could reach first." He shrugged again in response to her comment. "that was the first time I allowed myself to talk to you," he mused lightly. "Remember that?" It was technically an argument of sorts, but she'd cleaned and bandaged his wrists, helped him out, even after he'd snapped at her. It was the first time he'd let himself try to get to know her a bit better. And man, was he glad he had.

Mari nodded in agreement to the boy. The doctor was absolutely amazing... and she knew he'd do anything for Sage. But if it was little things, she could try her best to help him out so that he wouldn't need to go back to the doctor just encase he needed he needed his bandages changed or something. She just huffed in disagreement to the boy. Her work with the queen wasn't easy, and it wasn't even glamorous due to the queen. She spent most of her time running around after her and sweating all day... it wasn't exactly desirable. That's what not many people did it. But she also understood that Sage worked very hard, so it may be a bit... difficult for him to wrap his head around why her work wasn't exactly easy either. She gently ran her fingers up and down his arm after a moment or two with a small frown. "But... the tavern owner let it happen?" She asked quietly before shaking her head. She hated that, she really did... it was absolutely awful. "They brought them themselves, too? Did you not get a say or anything?" She asked quest, obviously feeling awful about it all. Her eyes then widened at him. "The tavern owner hit you?" She asked, liking almost... angry about the fact. She looked him over for a moment, her brows pinched together. "Do he do any of this?" She asked quietly. "We can get money off him as compensation if so," she grumbled, looking as though she was about ready to start a whole movement to get the boy a little bit of justice. She slowly relaxed again, though. "I do remember," she huffed quietly. "You were so mean," she teased lightly to the boy.

Sage hummed and nodded in response to the girls question. Then he reconsidered and wrinkled his nose with a shrug. "It's more like he didn't care one way or the other what the customer did," he mused. "A happy customer meant he got paid more, and that was really all that mattered to him," he pointed out. He held his hands up with a slight chuckle, rather amused that the girl seemed to be planning to sue the man for everything he was worth. "woah, woah, woah, no need for that," he chuckled in amusement. "He left some bumps and bruises, and a few small cuts here and there....nothing that would scar," he reassured the girl. He chuckled lightly at her comment about remembering and nodded. "I was awful," he agreed with amusement. "Though, I must say I'm rather glad I let myself take the risk of getting to know you better."

Mari just listened to him talk with a face like thunder... she didn't know why he let these people get away with what they did to him... she would have absolutely ruined some lives. But, she supposed it would be harder for Sage... he was lower down in. The pecking order than she was, and while she didn't care, that meant it was harder for him to get the help he needed when it came to this sort of thing. "But they were hurting you - he was hurting you," she murmured quietly, her brows furrowed slightly. She couldn't understand it... and she hated that the man she cared so deeply for was just accepting all of this. She looked between his eyes for a moment before sigh. "If you have no scars I can't do anything anyway," she huffed widely to the boy. "Buuuut, you could take me there so I can have a word with him," she hummed in a more up beat tone, as though she found some sort of loophole. She nodded in agreement to him. "Yeah, you were really quite bad. You nearly had me crying a few times, to be completely honest," she murmured to him before shaking her head. "I'm glad I decided I wanted to be around you to do that," she mused with a childish sounding chuckle.

Sage sighed and shrugged in response to her comment. "There wasn't anything I could do about it," he hummed. "If I argued or did anything wrong, I'd be out of a job....and I was trying to keep Lizzie and I from starving to death," he pointed out. "Not that I was doing a very good job at that," he grumbled. "And it was quite obvious no one higher up cared. If I went in town I'd get chased away by flying rocks, and if Anya hadn't sat down at my side and refused to leave the closet unless the queen brought me back to the doctor alongside her, the queen would've left me there to rot in the closet." He shrugged again and huffed out a breath. "Accepting it all just came with the process after a while," he murmured. "I learned that a long time ago." He cocked his head slightly at her comment about bringing her to him and grunted. "If you think you have a way to get money off the man, feel free to," he muttered. "I'm pretty sure you outrank him, so if you need a knife or gun or ...really anything, I have plenty," he added with a slight smile. The thought of the girl yelling at the man was just rather amusing. He wrinkled his nose slightly at her last comment and hummed. "that bad, huh," he asked with a slight chuckle. "Well, did I make up for it all yet in bed," he teased the girl lightly.
