Malakai Negri - Malakai looked up at her when she stood up. He took her outstretched hand and stood up, although not putting any pressure on her hand. He gathered the towels and damn articles of clothing before following her silently. Kai could tell that something was off with her. He was just trying to let her in and be nice and happy for once, but apparently, he did something wrong. Although what he did wrong he did not know. When they arrived at the palace, Malakai handed the towels and clothing off to a maid who was collecting laundry, then proceeded to follow her silently, the air between them thick. As they got up to her room, her night guard was already there. Malakai bowed to Camery, "Goodnight, Princess," he said politely before exiting. He went down to his quarters, steps weighted, and locked the door as always. With the setting sun came his wings and tattoos once again. Kai took a shower, feeling very much alone and empty even though this had been his routine for months. When he crawled into bed, he just lay there, tracing his tattoos thinking about her and what he might've done wrong. Kai really wanted to be at least friends with her, it just seemed as if he couldn't do anything right anymore. Eventually he drifted into sleep, dreaming about her once again.

Camery Valatieri - Camery trudged back to the castle, her steps heavy with exhaustion, her head pounding from the weight of it all. How had a simple joke upset him so much? She hadn’t meant to. All she wanted was for him to be... well, something. Friendly, maybe. Relaxed around her. But instead, she was left replaying every moment in her mind, searching for the misstep. What had she done wrong? The thoughts gnawed at her relentlessly, and before she knew it, she was back in her room, the familiar space doing little to calm the storm in her head. She startled when she heard his voice outside, a sharp jolt of surprise that quickly softened into a half-hearted smile. She waved him off, her polite dismissal hiding her turmoil, and turned to focus on herself instead. The warm spray of the shower helped wash away the traces of the lake, but not the tension in her shoulders. She scrubbed at her skin, trying to banish the heaviness that seemed to press down on her, but it lingered. By the time she’d changed into fresh clothes, her mind was still spinning. Why couldn’t he just relax around her? The joke, his reaction, the sudden shift—it all felt like too much. And yet, beneath the frustration, she couldn’t ignore the small flicker of gratitude. He’d told her something personal, something raw about his father, about his past. That had to mean he trusted her—at least a little. But even that thought felt hollow. The way he’d spoken... it felt detached, almost clinical, like it was something he had to force out. She didn’t want him to feel like that. Not with her. Eventually, she rolled her eyes, giving up on the endless loop of thoughts, and let herself collapse into bed. Sleep came quickly, pulling her into a deep, dreamless void, but even then, one image lingered in her mind. Malakai’s eyes—pleading and full of something she couldn’t quite name. The way the sun had caught his chest, his scars, the strength and vulnerability carved into every line of him. He was impossibly, maddeningly perfect. But finally, her exhaustion overtook her, and she sank deeper into sleep, her mind quieting at last. For now, she was just grateful to rest.

Malakai Negri - Malakai woke the next morning. He went through his normal morning routine, wait till the wings and tattoos faded, then get dressed, brush teeth, fix hair, and shave. Kai walked up to Camery's room, nodding to the tired night guard who then stalked away. Malakai took his post, just next to her door, quiet as ever as she was still asleep. He thought while he waited for her to wake. Kai still didn't know what he did wrong yesterday. Was it his silence to her joke about bringing her to bed? Maybe... but if it was, he didn't feel bad about it, and wouldn't. It was an inappropriate joke at the wrong time about a serious topic that he was trying to have a real conversation with her about. She needed to know what he could potentially do to her if she touched his back again, it wasn't a joke.

Camery Valatieri - The young woman slept through the night, though her rest was a little restless, her dreams feverish and fragmented. She stirred briefly when a maid came in with her breakfast, and again when the guard changed shifts, but she was still too worn out to fully wake. Instead, she drifted back into a deeper sleep, sprawled haphazardly across the bed. Her shorts and top had shifted as she tossed, and her hair was a chaotic mess across her face. In that moment, she looked so still, so peaceful—untouched by the weight of her waking thoughts. It wasn’t until later that she began to stir, blinking against the soft light of the morning. Her eyes fluttered open, and she glanced toward her bodyguard. If it had been anyone else, she might’ve found it strange to be watched, but with him, it was different. It was his job, after all. Her gaze lingered on him for a moment, her thoughts hazy with sleep, before she finally rolled out of bed. She grabbed a small muffin from the tray, nibbling at it as she shuffled over to him. Her movements were slow, her eyes still glazed with exhaustion. The thin straps of her top slipped down her shoulders as she came to stand in front of him, the muffin in hand. Without a word, she held it out to him, her silent way of offering something she figured he needed—food, or maybe just a small kindness. After a beat, her head dipped forward, her forehead coming to rest gently against his chest. “Please don’t be mad at me,” she murmured, her voice soft and barely audible. She stayed there for a moment, her words raw with vulnerability. “I didn’t want to upset you,” she whispered, her sincerity clear in the quiet stillness between them.

Malakai Negri - Malakai watched her, as she slept, as she woke, and as she walked over to him. Despite the stoic expression on his face, his eyes carried his emotion as they always did. Kai hesitated, but he took her offering, the muffin. He slowly and gently pulled her into a hug. "I could never be mad at you," he murmured softly to her. Kai had never realized how much smaller she was than him until now. He knew she was smaller than him, but as he hugged her right now, hunched over just to bury his nose in her hair and pull her against his chest, he realized that she must look so tiny and petite when he stood next to her.

Camery Valatieri - A soft breath escaped her as he pulled her into a hug, a little surprised but still half asleep. She just melted into him, her arms gently wrapping around his sides. His embrace was warm and comforting, his chest rising and falling with each breath, soft and steady, almost lulling her back into sleep. His arms held her gently, giving her the quiet reassurance that if she wanted to pull away, she could—there was no pressure, no sense of being trapped. She could feel the slight brush of his nose against her hair, the familiar scent of his aftershave enveloping her, grounding her in the moment. She squeezed him lightly before leaning back, her eyes meeting his as she offered a small, soft smile. He really was something else, unlike anyone she’d ever met. He was taller than her, of course, but standing this close, he felt vast—almost as if he towered over her in a way she hadn’t expected. She opened her mouth slightly, her hands still resting on his sides, but the hug had loosened into something more casual now. "I really mean it," she began, her voice gentle, laced with sincerity. "And thank you for telling me about your dad. It must have been hard," she whispered, her words quiet but full of empathy, hoping he could feel just how much she meant them.

Malakai Negri - Malakai held her sides when she pulled away, gently, so she knew she could pull away any time she wanted to. Kai nodded. "I know," he said softly, lifting his hand to her face and gently swept away a loose strand of her hair, returning it to its place behind her ear, then shifting his hand so he was cupping her cheek. His touch was lighter that ever, making sure she knew she could pull away from him anytime she wanted or needed to. Malakai looked into her eyes for a long while, as if they could communicate through looking through each others eyes. His were filled with raw adoration and love for her. Kai leaned down slowly, and softly kissed her cheek. Even though it was just a whisper of a kiss on her cheek, something shifted between them, and that little kiss meant a lot. Kai knew he was a goner now, he loved her.

Camery Valatieri - A small smile tugged at Camery's lips when he said he knew. He knew she had been upset the day before, and that she felt awful about it. The last thing she wanted was to upset him. She didn’t know what to say, how to make things right, how to make him feel better. But all her worries faded the moment his fingers brushed her face, his hand gently resting on her cheek. The touch was so soft, so tender—she hadn’t expected him to be so gentle. He always appeared so stoic, so cold, yet his eyes told a different story, one filled with emotions she couldn’t quite decipher. She sighed softly, her chest loosening just a little, but then his face was next to hers, his lips gently brushing against her cheek. A rush of warmth spread across her face, and a tired, goofy grin bloomed on her lips, a reflection of the fluttering feelings racing through her. Her heart skipped a beat as she studied him. He looked... well, she wasn’t entirely sure. There was something in his gaze that made her skin feel like it was on fire, something that made her both nervous and completely drawn to him at the same time. After a quiet moment, she swallowed hard, running a hand through her hair as she pulled away just enough to adjust the straps on her top. Her eyes lingered on him, filled with curiosity, as she took his hand and gently pulled him toward her bed, sitting him down carefully. She settled beside him, her gaze soft, her voice almost a whisper as she spoke. "Do you want to tell me more about it?" she murmured, her head tilting slightly. "About your childhood... your father?" Her tone was gentle, inviting, as she waited for him to share more, hoping he would open up to her... she wanted to know more about him.

Malakai Negri - Malakai's hands drifted back to his side when she pulled away. He let her take his hand and lead him over to her bed, completely willing to do or talk about anything she wished. Not only as he felt obligated to do so as he was her bodyguard, but as the man who loved her, even if she didn't know it yet. Kai shook his head. "Thats really all there is to it," he replied, voice just above a whisper. Malakai was completely willing to open up and share anything about himself to her, with the exception of anything to do with the Night Kingdom, it was just, that was all his father was to him. His father was just his father who beat him if he didn't do as he was told. "My mother wasn't much better either. She didn't hit me or anything, but she didn't try to stop my father when he would whip me,"

Camery settled beside him, her legs crossed as she sat with a quiet ease, her expression open, yet tinged with curiosity. She wanted to know more—she needed to understand. The last thing she ever wanted to do was upset him, to push him away. Maybe if she knew more about him, about his past, she could help. It was clear now that he was opening up to her, his voice softer, more vulnerable than it had been before, and something inside her shifted. Her heart softened as she listened, her hair falling loosely over her shoulder, the soft golden lines tracing down her neck and arms, glowing faintly in the dim light. She looked at him then, and it was like seeing right through him. She could feel the weight of his pain, his past, and it made her heart ache in a way she hadn't expected. Her voice was quiet, almost a whisper as she asked, "Why did he do it?" The words hung in the air, heavy and full of compassion. Of course, she knew it didn’t excuse anything. No one should ever hurt a child. She couldn’t even begin to fathom the cruelty it took to belittle something so small, so innocent, so defenseless. She shifted her gaze to Malakai, and for the first time, she could almost picture him as a child—small, vulnerable, with no one to protect him. It struck her with a painful clarity. He was that child. And now, he was here with her. His job was to keep her safe. The irony twisted something in her chest, and as she looked at him, a quiet realization washed over her. She wasn’t just fond of him anymore. She was falling for him in a way she couldn’t stop, in a way that terrified and comforted her all at once. "At least they're gone now," she whispered softly. It didn't fix the past, but... she hoped he was safe.
