| The Korowai (West Papua, Indonesia): Residing in remote southeastern Papua, this group is famous for living in treetop houses. Historically, some clans were reported to execute and consume male witches, known as khakhua. However, modern anthropologists suspect that with frequent contact with the outside world, the practice has largely ended, and some legends are now perpetuated to encourage tourism. The Asmat (West Papua, Indonesia): Known for their intricate woodcarving, the Asmat Tribe traditionally practiced headhunting and ritual cannibalism. They believed that consuming the flesh of their enemies or loved ones allowed them to absorb their spiritual power. Today, the Asmat are largely Catholic, and these rituals belong to the past. |
