The woman gave a sigh when the boy wandered over to carriage. The woman sort of moved to loop an arm through his, allowing him to lean on her slightly as they wandered into the office. She watched the children wandering off before giving the doctor a little smile. She quickly realised that Sage wasn't able to talk to the older man, and sort of shook her head. "He's been coughing none stop," she murmured softly, sort of settling him down on the doctors chair. "He can't breathe... and he hurts. I don't know how long it's been going on for. Only noticed last night," she the murmured softly.

The doctor sort of pursed his lips and nodded in response to her comments, moving to press a stethoscope to sages chest for a moments before grunting. "Why don't we get you over to a bed and -" he cut off when Sage crumpled suddenly, knowing Mari wouldn't be able to hold his whole weight be herself. His eyes had rolled back in his head by then, and when he grabbed the boy, he shouted to alert one of the helpers, moving to carry sage to a bed. "He's not breathing....sit her down somewhere," he instructed the other maid, already moving to grab a scalpel to try and ease the pressure in his chest

The woman nodded, sort of trying to move him over... she was confused for a moment, though when Saged weight crashed down on her shoulders she was more than relieved that the old doctor had grabbed him... though the worry suddenly came back to her when she noticed that her husband wasn't breathing... or responding to anything the was saying. She tried to help get him onto the bed, though was quickly shoved out the way of all the maids and the doctor trying to help... she didn't even know what was happening. He was sick, yes... but just how sick exactly?

Sage obviously wasn't aware of what was happening...but the doctor was. Well, he knew sage had some kind of lung issue, that had caused him to stop breathing all of a sudden. He worked on him for maybe fourty minutes or so, though it all seemed to fly by. Finally though, he'd stabilized sage enough that he was breathing with the help of a sort of pump (similar to a ventilator we use now) and a ton of steroids. With that, he took off his bloody gloves and threw them away, wiping himself off the best he could with a rag before going to sit down next to Mari with a grunt. "Your husband certainly likes to go big when he's ill," he mused. "I had to open his chest up to fix some things....and he's breathing now with the help of a machine," he told her gently. "Hopefully, antibiotics will get rid of the infection in his lungs."

The woman sort of paced anxiously as she waited for Sage... she hadn't seen the kids in a little while either. She wondered if she should find them... no. Sage might be fine and then she would have worried them for no reason. She sort of groaned after half an hour, going to sit down as she waited for her husband... though, much to her disappointment the doctor wandered out. She furrowed her brows a little with a small smile, obviously a nervous one. "He's an all or nothing kind of guy," she then mused, though kind of nodded along as she listened to him. "So he'll be okay soon then?" She murmured worriedly. "I didn't even know he was that sick until last night..." she then added.

The doctor sort of let out a sigh when the girl asked if he'd be alright, and shrugged. "Hopefully, the machine and steroids can keep his lungs going until the antibiotics can clear up the infection and he can breathe on his own again," he explained. "but...there is the chance he won't manage to breathe again. The tavern smoke did more damage than we originally realized. He's in pretty bad shape," he told her gently. "You can go see him....but I'll warn you his chest isn't pretty and he's got a tube down his throat to help him breathe. He's still unconscious," he added.

The woman gave a small nod to the doctor, obviously still worried... did she want to see him? Well, of course she did, but in the state he was in she wasn't so sure. Eventually she stood up and gave a small nod. "Yeah... I'll come see him," she murmured quietly. Why hadn't he said anything sooner? They could have done so much more to prevent it from getting so bad. Anyway, they couldn't really think like that. Ty we just had to to the best they could with what they knew now. She sort of wandered into the little room, sitting down next to her husband cautiously. "You said he might not be able to breath himself again?" She asked the doctor with a cocked head.

The doctor nodded when Mari said she'd want to see him, so he slid in ahead of her to pull the blankets up a bit, covering most of where they'd had to cut him open and then stitch his chest back closed again. He then moved a chair for her over next to the bed, watching the machine pump sages chest up and down slowly. He hummed softly when Mari asked her question. "The machines are our best chance but they're also new," he told her. "sometimes we can't wean patients off of them if they wake up because their bodies have become so dependent on the help," he sighed. "Best case scenario hell wake up soon and will recover fully." Worst case scenario was, obviously, that he'd never wake up. He could be in a coma like that, dependent on a machine, for the rest of his life. "He's strong, and stubborn....I don't think he'll leave you and the kids if he can help it," he mused, patting her arm before leaving her alone and going to entertain the kids for a while.

The woman sort of glanced over at the doctor before eventually moving to look at Sage. He was so lifeless... and it did worry her. Sage had been through so much. Would he be able to get through this too? The doctor said he wouldn't want to leave their family, but Sage didn't have much of a choice in the matter. He was completely at the mercy of whatever higher power the had to have been. She glanced back at the doctor for a moment before her brows furrowed. "He can't be strong forever, you know," she muttered softly as the man left.

The doctor had heard the girls comments, but chose not to respond. Sometimes it was just better for someone to be able to grieve a little bit. The first bit of time always seemed to be the hardest, then it got easier, especially as the patient improved. And he did think sage would come out of this ...he wasn't the healthiest person alive, but they'd been able to repair a lot that had been wrong in his lungs. And he was stubborn. But it wasn't without hope, not at all. He seemed like he'd rest for a while, then the medicine would help him enough to get him off the machine and back to normal.
