Just because no one seems to know because they keep giving me the wrong answer: You CAN plant hay in pastures. How you do it: It has to be spring in-game. You go to the pasture. (Go to home>barns>click on the pasture.) You can then scroll down where you manage horses there will be a tab on that that says HAY. Click it. This took me a whole day to figure out and several people answered my question repeatedly wrong. Good luck.

It depends on what you mean by retire/ what you want to do. If you want to get rid of the horse you can free range it, there's a button on the bottom of the horse's page for this.

The game adds the retired marker automatically to horses that are 18yrs or older, to let players know they can't be bred anymore. You cannot give the marker to them.
