I use GIMP and Pixlr for my editing since I don't have Photoshop, but I recently saw a tutorial that helped me do a blue roan. After you finish smudging/prepping the body of your horse, you use your burn tool to go over the face (using a fuzzy brush) on light opacity/strength. I did this several times and did the same for the legs. On real roan horses, their coloring is darker on the face and legs. I did this recently and used a grey horse as a stock image. Hope this helps! I haven't tried red roans yet, but I hope to figure that out soon.

I select the body with a feather and up the brightness while desaturating.

I create a second body layer, desaturate it and play with the curves so the highlights and shadows are well balanced. Place beneath the main body layer and erase away to reveal the white underneath. This allows you to use eraser brushes of different shape, size and opacity to give you maximum control over the roaning.
