yeah I'm of the same mind honestly--you never know where the good ones are until you give 'em a little time to show it, although once you *have* a number of good horses then that raises the standard and you gotta keep the population down somehow. everyone's at a different point in their stable though so up to the individual to decide

Recently got Ibis Paint but am lost on how to use it, pattern making and re-colouring are my main struggles.

I've been workingon body prep which i can now do easily on there

I only have the free version!

They were doing a black horse with a overo/roan, Its totally normal if you do a pattern over a horse without using grayscale atall.

For patterns, I usually start by using the lasso tool to select the areas that will have the white pattern. Then I use the filter tool and choose Greyscale as the filter I want to use. With that filter, you can adjust the brightness, and I believe you can also mess with the contrast so that your highlights and shadows stay very distinct.

For recolors, I always like to start with a greyscale horse. Then, I typically draw a blob of whatever color I'd like to change the horse to (ex. Chestnut) on a layer above my prepped horse stock. Then, I can use the filter tool on the horse layer, and with the Hue, Saturation Brightness option, I mess around until I get almost the exact color I want. From there, I can always adjust with overlay layers and add points or roaning.

If you need more help, feel free to PM me! I'm not as much of a pro as someone like the awesome Gem, but I understand Ibis pretty well and I've been using it to make manips for roughly a year now.
