Hello! I was wondering if anybody had any techniques of doing manes/tails with a touchpad. Whenever I do mine it looks really stiff and ugly, so I was wondering if anybody could help :)

Honestly, I know some people do them that way and manage, but it's pretty much just not going to be as good in terms of results. If you are committed to working on art in the future, it might be a worthwhile investment to look into a tablet. You can get them used/refurbished/etc online for much cheaper than they would be new. I got my tablet for around $50 I think, in perfect condition, but I'm sure you could get them cheaper.

I'm using PS, and I know many artists on here can make their manes and tails look really good and they use a touchpad. I'm not sure I would like to get a tablet yet as I don't know how long I will be into art.

Oh. For some reason I thought trackpad meant tablet. Whoops. Sorry, not sure how to help you.

I use a trackpad!

Smudge - 100% hardness, size 2-3 depending on what you're doing. Start with three to get the thick hairs, then 2 to even everything out. At least, that's what I do.

I use a tablet myself, but I have stuck with the same technique since I started: smudge.

I use 94% with a size 4 brush to get the shape of the mane and tail, and then a size 2 brush to get the finer hairs, make it more realistic. Worked find for me on a trackpad, and it works fine for me on a tablet too :)

There are lots of great hair tutorials on YouTube using ps that do a great job explaining things... lots of different styles as well ;) Good luck!
