As of May 2024, the only zoo in the United States with giant pandas is Zoo Atlanta. The zoo's pandas are expected to be returned to China between October and December 2024.
The China Wildlife and Conservation Association has lent pandas to the United States since 1972 as part of an agreement known as "panda diplomacy". The agreement has allowed zoos to work with China on conservation and research projects.
The San Diego Zoo is expected to receive two new giant pandas from China in the near future. The pandas are expected to arrive by the end of summer if all permits and requirements are approved.
