I have decided I want to start an apricot SD PON line (eventually I think I will try for Apricot Appaloosa). Now, I know you need to cross a chestnut to a pearl for a chance of it. But could someone break down the genetics so I know what to look at in mares and stallions? ~ Also if you breed an apricot back to a chestnut or pearl, does that heighten your chance of getting an apricot? ~ Also anyone willing to help hit me up!

Apricot is chestnut with two copies of pearl (prlprl since pearl is recessive)

I think you also need the homozygous recessive alleles for Extension and Agouti, so it should be e/e and a/a, with prl/prl. I am 90% sure this is the case, but I could be wrong. Edited at December 10, 2023 03:09 PM by Sungold Eventing

The foal need to be ee prlprl. The Agouti gene is not relevent. It can have a pattern (Roan, Tobiano, Lp, etc.) or Silver or Dun without affecting the Apricot. Avoid White, Champagne, Grey, Cream. If the foal is CcrC or CcrCcr it'll not be apricot even if it's ee prlprl too so try to avoid it if you can. Good luck :)

If you want the exact genotype for a plain apricot here on HEE it would be: ee CC prlprl chch gg ww The other genes are up to your discretion. The A/At/a locus doesn't matter because that only affects black-based colors, not red-based (an apricot is technically just a chestnut pearl). If you want dun, you'll need Dd, but if you don't you'll want dd. Same for Tobiano, Sabino, Rabicano, etc.

To be apricot your foal needs to be ee and prlprl, if a bay horse has Ee Prlprl it can produce apricot with another horse of the same genes. Chestnut usually have ee Prlprl. it will be 50% chance of apricot breeding horses with these genes.
you can breed an apricot back to horses that have one copy of e and one copy of prl to get apricot again 50% chance.
apricot to apricot will always be apricot.
greys can produce apricot , but they must have the copy of e and prl. i breed for apricot Tbs so I know the color and genes well. If you need any extra help message me! I also have a Pon account so I'm well versed in that breed as well.
