Living Alone in the City. Should I get a dog? | TW: stalking October 7, 2022 07:14 PM

I hate living in the city. I keep reminding myself that I am here for my education so I can keep getting my degrees so I can be where I want to be but its so dangerous here. I wear mace around my neck and it still isn't a deterrant from creeps. Literally last weekend, I was followed for four blocks when I walked my sister to a train/bus station after she visited for the weekend. I am forever grateful for the two strangers I ended up walking up to and asking if they would please help me, on the verge of tears, because I was being followed.
I was walking back from the bus station when a guy stopped me and asked to buy my shoes. I told him no and kept walking. When he asked if he could buy just one shoe, I ignored him and walked to the end of the street. I turned back to see if I could cross the street since there were cars coming and I wanted to get away from him since he seemed angry that I ignored him. When I turned back to see if the traffic was coming, he came towards me so I ended up crossing the street while traffic was still coming. He crossed behind me. I walked up three blocks. He was still there. So to see if he was following me, I took a right turn (he turned as well) and then took another right to head back towards the station (the direction we came from) and he turned as well. I ended up trying to find a way into a skating rink which had a large chain fence and almost always has some security in there but I coulnt find a way in. The only possible way that I could see was in through an alley way that I didnt want to risk taking and getting stuck in. So I instead kept walking until I found a couple and asked them for help. When the man saw me talking to them, he turned back around and headed the other way. The people I was talking to saw this and offered to walk with me for a minute up towards my apartment while I was trying everything I possibly could to not have a break down.
I made it back to my apartment and am so grateful for those people. It made me realize how dangerous it really is here. I can ignore the blood on the streets all I want... or I could have a week ago but not anymore. When that happened all of these things and bad memories of past experiences came flooding back and I am in the process of looking into therapy.
After explaining to my parents who live in another state what happened, they were concerened. That same day, there was a sh**ting near where my sister lives. I have trained a dog once before in bite work and I am thinking about doing it again. I want to get a doberman or some other breed that would be okay living in an apartment. I lead a very active lifestyle and walk everywhere (i dont have a car) and there are large parks in the area I can take the dog to. I am just not sure if it is fair to the dog. I am looking for an apartment compatable breed which I have seen that dobermans are as long as they get their exercise. I would be able to take the dog on campus with me since it is a dog friendly campus and wouldnt start bite work unless I knew the dog is 100% mentally and physically sound and that he/she is obedience trained on and offleash. I feel like it is extreme and the dog would be a sort of safety thing for me since obviously mace isnt enough even when displayed. Before I moved here I planned on getting a dog but didnt because I figured I would wait to see how things were. A walk to the grocery store is a risk especially by myself. I don't know hardly anyone and while I have roommates, they are always off doing their own thing. So I have just started ordering my groceries. And I just feel trapped. What should I do?

Well if you get a dog make sure the breed is allowed at where you're staying and your roommates are okay with it. Next time you're followed walk towards a very public place or to the police station, and then scream bloody murder. This will get people's attention and the stalker will probably run off.

I checked with my roommates and they are totally fine with it and I talked to the apartment people and there are no breed restrictions or anything so I am good as far as that goes. My rent just goes up a little each month.

I would do it. A Doberman would be a great breed. They have that "mean" look and are great guard dogs, would definitely ward off people with bad intentions. I would take self defense classes though and if it were me, I'd have a concealed carry permit. I already carry a taser and pepper spray. Can never be too careful these days

I have a black belt in tae kwon do but it's been years since I practiced so it would probably be a good idea to pick it up again just in case. As for the concealed carry, my co workers and I talked about that but because my 21st isn't until May, that's a long time to wait. They said I should consider a dog or not be afraid to deploy the pepper spray/mace. My concern is that it is a city and people were close so I don't want to get them too. People are insane and a lot for things that happened recently has brought old things back up so I'm trying to get into therapy just to get back to a more stable state mentally.

I would get back into TKD. A Doberman is a good choice or if you like Rottwilers. I tend to carry several blades on me at all times.

I think you should definitely get a dog, and carry at least one weapon on you. Simply the intimidating presence of a dog would make people think twice, and if that dog is trained in bitework, even better.
My dog isn't trained on protection or anything but hes saved me multiple times. Im sorry you were followed, it definitely shakes you up
Sending hugs

I would get a dog and carry a non-lethal weapon. I have heard great things about the Hero Gun. You can learn more about it here: Hero Gun. It is a small gun with a laser sight that shoots pepper cartridges.
Also, no offense, but I don't think tae kwon do will do much especially if the men are large. I am sorry you are going through this. It sounds scary.

I have considered rottweilers but I have found that they are mostly banned around where I live. While my apartment doesnt have an issue with it, I would have a really hard time finding an apartment with a rottweiler.
As far as bitework training goes, I am looking at pretrained dogs as well as ones that I could work myself but already trained dogs are WAY out of my price range so it will take time but I would train the dog myself. I kind of like what one training 'company' has done which is where their dogs are very friendly but have a sort of "on switch" so the dog goes into a mode of protection almost immediately.
The non lethal weapon thing is a great idea. I will have to look into it. The TKD probably wouldn't do much at this point since I am a small person (I am 5ft 4in) and while I did some ju-jitsu work and boxing, it isnt something I did a lot of. It definitely was terrifying and I have found a therapist through a friend. I am just trying to figure out what I should be doing to stay safe that would be more effective that just carrying pepper spray around my neck since obvously it doesnt work as a deterrant.
