Was quite busy yesterday :) Here's an update.

Might work Terry later but who knows.

- What Happened With Scooter 7/3 -

We went to our first event derby together yesterday. He was quite responsive and fun to ride. I feel like we could have been more round for dressage and our test was marked mainly for crookedness, loss of energy, and an uneven tempo. We got a 42.2.

He was really fun for cross country. Last time we schooled he was a bit of a nut so I was happy that I needed more encouragement versus struggling to pull him back. The course was cool and I had to run backwards because I almost skipped a tire jump. Looking back at the video I see that I missed a different jump but I guess no one noticed because I wasn't marked down lol. We walked away with first place :D

- What Happened With Terry 7/3 -

I was feeling lazy and it was quite hot out so we didn't ride. Since Terry is used to slant loading and my new trailer is a straight load, I decided to trailer train.

We had practiced one other time; the day I got the trailer. She had been afraid of stepping in but I made her work outside so she considered the trailer her resting place. It had worked. This time I wanted to try going straight in. What do ya know? She pops right in :D I hurry behind her and push her in a little so I can latch the butt gate and then I went around to the feed door. I gave her lots of treats and tied her before closing the door with the window open. I hadn't closed her in yet so I wanted to make sure she wouldn't become afraid.

I did this twice and called it quits. Babe is no longer scared of the straight load!

- What Happened With Rosco Today -

Went to see my boy this morning! This is the second time he has been laying down with his filly friends and he lets me come sit with them. I hung out for a bit, scratching him and letting him play with the halter in his mouth, and then I put the halter on. I sat there a moment longer with him while he wore it. The owner of the rescue was in the forest behind him and pushed down a loose tree so he leaped up in fear. I scratched him and let him see what had happened.

I ended up doing our work in the pasture. As always I started off with yielding the hindquarters/forequarters, making sure he steps in front. Then I made sure he was desensitized to the rope by smacking the ground beside and behind him, swinging it over his head, and flying it over his body. A nice and quite little boy ^-^

Then I moved on. Putting the rope on the other side of him, I lightly held under his halter and draped it around his bum so I could hold it in my other hand. I rubbed back and forth lightly above his hocks for a moment to desensitize. Then I wiggled the rope by his tummy on my side. Now that he was okay with the rope I let go of the spot below the halter ad stepped back, putting pressure on the halter. He yielded his hindquarters 360° and I kept stepping back so he'd follow me. I don't want him to drag behind me when leading or practicing so I pulled him forward if he was leaning on the pressure.

I did this on both side a few times. Then I moved on to doing the same in a simpler way. I held the tail of the rope next to me and moved the other side on his other side. You just keep walking and he turns 180° to follow you.

I did that both ways and then moved to work on lunging. He walks and will try stopping near his buddies. I want him to move off of me pointing my finger so I practiced making him trot. Rosco was sticky at first and even put up a fight a few times when approaching his friends. After he was getting reactive I took a break and walked around, doing some turns and simple things that he knows well. Then I went back to lunging and he moved into the trot well.

I ended by picking up his feet and then I let him loose. We cuddled a little first though :3

- What Happened With Hero -

Yesterday while I was at the show the rescue went to retrieve a new mustang foal. His mother passed away and they put him in a pen with older foals. They made him their punching bag and he's got lots of scrapes/scars. You can see every bone in his body, he's weak, he's sad, and he isn't eating much. He's a little happier feeling wanted though. We think he's about two weeks old.

While I played with Rosco they laid him down and syringed him some milk and water. Then he took a nap and was still sleeping when I left. We are unsure if he will pull through but we're hopeful. He is now being called Hero. He managed to survive the pen, he made it through a night with us, and he'll hopefully make it through many more in a better condition. He's a little hero.

Didn't ride yesterday or the day before but my excuses are valid! I ride later in the day because it can be pretty hot during the day. One day there was a horse getting shown off to buyers multiple times and the other the power went out. My fences are pure electric wire and I didn't want a furious Tiny escaping to find his girlfriend. Soooo... Hopefully today I'll get some riding in. I did see Hero yesterday though!

In case you're wondering, he's doing better. He's able to stand up on his own and we've got him drinking some milk. Today the nurse mare is coming in (yay!) so hopefully he'll like her.

I know what it's like to want to ride in the evenings due to heat. Where I'm at, it's a good 95+ (Fahrenheit) and almost 90% humidity. Totally miserable during the day. I want until the sun is half down to practice barrels so my mare doesn't get overheated. Some of our here gets darker from sweat without doing any work. My barrel mare has super short, slick, fine hair and a thin mane, so she dles very well in hot weather. Despite the thin mane, she has a thick tail to keep the flies away. Evening is the only time we can practice due to heat and lack of outdoor lights.

Okay, rode Terry last night and then my internet wasn't working. Didn't feel like all of the "A' thingies from my phone so I waited to update.

- What Happened -

I did a good bit of switching directions. Walk and trot were good, halts were fine. She was really being sticky about her bum and shoulder the whole time. Like I've said in a previous post, her bum is huge so she has a tendency to let her bum come off the wall since its easier. It was easy to correct in the beginning of the ride but as time went on she wanted to avoid my leg a little.

I did lots of 10 meter trot circles and they were pretty good. There was one time where I kept going round and round because every time I reached the corner she'd speed up and stick her nose out. Luckily there weren't many other yucky circles.

I'm not sure what to think of her canter. There were moments when she stopped using her body and just flung herself forward, sticking out her nose and avoiding me saying "slow". The rest of the time I can't figure out if she was just using her bum well and getting power or speeding off. There was a moment down a short wall that I started looking around and things weren't flying by; our speed was good. So I think I need to work on feeling the canter better.

My head has this horrid tendency to "over dramatize" bad parts of rides and focus on the negative. There was a looong period of time where I felt like a total failure in my riding (for more reasons than I'll state here) every single time I dismounted. I dreaded going out to work with Terry. I'm happy to say that I've come out of that and I feel that way much much much less. What kind of worried me after this ride was that I felt the slightest bit of that pure negativity. Luckily I caught it and beat it away, looking at the good in my ride so I wouldn't put it in the books as twenty steps back.

So as much as I want to call it a bad ride it really wasn't. There were a couple hiccups, yes, but no one can be perfect. Horses and people are not perfect. So today I'm doing another flat ride to hopefully get back in a good feeling. If all goes to plan I'll jump tomorrow. :D

Well peeps... Its been a weird week.

I got back from vacation last Monday in the early day. I didn't have the motivation to ride but I neeeeeded to see my ponies so I did. Terry and I went for a trail ride and... That was crap. lol. Weird thing was she was amazing on the flat (when we got back I rode in the arena to correct bad behaviors).

From Tuesday to Friday I didn't get up from my spot on the reclining couch unless I was forced to. It wasn't just my usual lazy character. I won't go into detail but I just felt like a piece of crap. Two nights in a row I was left staring at the darkness into the later AMs because I couldn't sleep.

Eventually I ended up forcing myself to get up and go outside. My horses had been on their own for too long. As soon as I stepped out the door I had some horrible feelings but I pushed through and had I great ride with Terry. She was so so so amazing.

I still don't have any motivation but I've gone on to do an event with the foal rescue and get outside with the GSD pups. Hopefully I can get myself outside with Terry today ;)

But to move away from the sad stuff... Rosco is coming home next week! :D

Okay, he might be coming home next week. The filly he came to us with went to her new home yesterday and we want to give him some time to get over her before changing his whole world. Pepper, the filly, cared more about him than he did her so I think we're good for next week but I'll let him tell me if he's ready.

I'm going to try and bring this thread back to life! I just need to bring my riding back to life lol.
