Horse Eden : Avenoir x Belle

Pryham, Idaho is situated in the North Central region of the state, a few hours' drive from Washington, Oregon, and Montana. Previously just rugged, mountainous wilderness, Pryham has become significant with the rise of the ski resort's popularity. There are about a dozen main roads stretching through this large area, most of them long and straight with seemingly nowhere to go. Just outside the resort, there are a handful of strip malls attached to condos and rentals, mostly following the large creek that flows for miles beyond this area. There are a handful of restaurants and fast food joints, and one bar that is rarely open, smells of mold, and has had many associations with mild to fatal cases of food poisoning. There is also a "mall," which is not much of a mall at all, and is primarily filled with local shops run by finicky owners who decide when they want to work and when they don't. It's not uncommon for the majority of the shops to be closed during business hours. Most of the shopping done by visitors is done within the resort, and most of the shopping done in Pryham is done by the locals.

East of the resort, which lies on the very west outskirts of the county, the roads seem to go for miles. About a twenty minute drive will take you past many ranches and lots of cattle. At the end of this drive, there is another, much smaller, town focused around one large ranch called Bristal Ranch. Bristal Ranch is located five minutes from Bristal County Fairgrounds, which is a fancy name for what the locals refer to as 'the rodeo.' Directly across from the ranch is a bar called Rusty's, which is where the majority of the locals go for any sort of entertainment, as well as pre- and post-gaming the rodeo. Ten minutes down the street from the rodeo is a small, one-stoplight town with a small supermarket, a barber shop, one or two family owned cafes, and a tack and feed store. This town is called Fairglass, Idaho, and houses all those homesteaders who are unhappy with the innovation occurring due to the resort. Other than that, it's a several hour roadtrip to get to any sort of civilization in one of the major cities.

The Resort

Pinecrest Resort is very large and widespread, with hundreds of acres yet to be developed. Despite its lack of similarity to a college or university, the different sections of the resort are referred to as different areas of the "campus." They are as follows:

Central Campus is a hexagonal area in the dead center of the resort filled with shops, restaurants, and things of that nature. Though it may appear large at first, this area is actually rather small and gets old rather quickly for many of the athletes that stay at Pinecrest for a season or more. There is also a lack of variety in stock, causing anyone who is looking for anything other than bare essentials or winter sports equipment to branch out and look elsewhere.

West Campus is positioned to the left of center and is filled with many forms of lodging such as hotels, condos, and small rental cottages. These are typically reserved for temporary lodging, whereas if an individual is staying for more than three months, they are sent up to the more cost-efficient lodging on North Campus. Many of the West Campus hotels are modeled like high-rise apartments, illuminating the landscape of the resort. It is about a two-mile walk to Central Campus from here. Beyond this are several halfpipes and a massive two-story gymnasium.

North Campus is generally considered to be the mountain range the slopes are built on, and the majority of the athletic activity occurs here. It is a steep walk up a guided trail from Central Campus to reach mostly anything, though the slopes themselves are accessible by ski lift just a small ways away from CC. Regulars know about a secret trail off of one of the lifts that leads to the rest of North Campus without the annoyance of driving all the way around to the back entrance. It's not unheard of for the regulars to sneak their groceries onto one of the lifts, or ride up to check on something on a lift only to disappear into the woods.

While the side of the mountain facing CC are all for the slopes, the backside houses the ski jump, and the cross country skiing trails alongside the flattish top of the mountain range. In one particular plateau, a large group of cabins provide residential living for staff and visiting teams on a budget. Another group of cottages sit lower, much closer to the road. It is here that the bobsled track and both ice rinks reside, which either function as the ice skating and hockey rinks, or the professional and practice rinks depending on which events are occurring at any moment. There is also another gym here, this one three-stories, and reserved exclusively for residential athletes. All of this is accessible via the long, uphill hike from CC or the long, winding back entrance to the resort, which takes an additional twenty minute drive. Depending on the season and demand, shuttles sometimes run back and forth. Beyond North Campus, flat acreage runs as far as the eye can see in the valley owned by the resort owners. Undoubtedly, that will be something one day as well.

South Campus isn't much of anything other than a recreational outdoor figure skating rink for non-athletes and another group of restaurants, bars, and shops like CC. There's some uncleared swamp in the area where the creek is, and on the other side, a large ranch not owned by the resort. It seems as if there is a story there, but no one is willing to tell it.

West Campus is the site of the hospital and the main hotel, as well as a large conference center and some family friendly attractions. The main hotel is an old, historic mansion in which the resort owners reside. It is closed to the public primarily, and is well-hidden in the mountains.

Family / Background: Bryce’s dad was the brother of the owner of the resort. His dad was always the irresponsible, addiction-prone brother with the raging temper, not fitting in with his siblings who all became successful in their own ways. After getting Christine pregnant with Bryce, Michael left for anywhere else, and was eventually told to have been incarcerated. He grew up in the local trailer park with his mom, stepsister, and stepbrother, having been paid off by the owner of the resort to keep quiet about his identity. Despite this and the animosity he feels for them and for this town, he has always channeled his emotion into his sport, and has become very skilled. This is the one thing he feels no one has taken from him, and he has assumed the role of hometown hero comfortably, every so often asking his uncle to pay off anyone who starts to ask about family ties.

He keeps to himself and isn't known to be very friendly, or to make much of an effort towards anyone. He doesn't trust anyone easily due to the way he grew up, and he doesn’t talk much of himself. If you ask him a question, he’ll answer it, but he’s not big to share. He’d rather just listen and murmur a contribution to the conversation here and there.

View of Romance: He’s terrified of being either of his parents, so he panics at the idea of love altogether. Has had an on/off relationship with Milena for over three years, though he’s barely told her anything about himself and barely knows anything about her. He likes the safety of a casual relationship, but feels the desire to be more close with her emotionally, and when she agrees to pursue a more serious relationship, he flakes and ghosts her. This cycle has repeated until she finally “walked away” despite still being moderately involved with him. He gets some female attention, as one would expect from the hometown hero, but he wants nothing to do with it. He hates love, the idea of it, and anything surrounding it.

Family / Background: Este’s dad, Jero, is a well-known Spanish cook in the culinary community. He met Este’s mom, Alisa, on a cruise ship he was cooking on for a while, and the rest is history. He comes from a very loving, present family and is very close with his siblings. Though he’s been to South Africa and has retained much of the accent, he grew up primarily in Northern Spain, learning the ropes of winter sports there. After repeated attempts to compete for Spain without catching their attention, Este agreed to compete for South Africa, who had been attempting to recruit him for years. He has since joined them for his second or third year of international training and competition as a member of their four man bobsled team primarily, but they have agreed to let him compete in snowboard events as well as it is his passion.

View of Romance: Este is very excited to be in a relationship with someone and settle down and have children. He tends to be a bit of a hopeless romantic, and it has been known that he has never turned down a date with a woman, regardless of his thoughts or feelings on the matter. He believes love could be waiting for him around any corner, and he doesn’t want his first impression to blind him from what’s meant for him. However, being here, Este is dead set against getting into a relationship at the moment. He doesn’t want to lose focus on what really matters at this stage, after he’s worked so hard to come this far. And, being so fearful of a relationship, he’s trying extremely hard to stay away from anything that could tempt him into one.

She, like many at the resort, has big Olympic dreams.

Hair Color: dark brown, mid-length and wavy with long curtain bangs. Often crimped because she wears it in braids a lot, though it's just as frequent she'll straighten it for formal occasions.

Gen. Appearance: maven is tall, often wearing her dark hair in two long braids. Bangs peek out from under her ski helmet, and it is known that despite the apparent toning that she's put on her lanky frame, she looks more like a figure skater than a skiier. She struggles to keep weight on, and to fight against the judgment of the sport she excels in. She has intelligent amber eyes that often sparkle with mischief, a big, bright smile revealing nice teeth and dimples, and a copious sprinkling of freckles on the bridge of her small nose. She wears a lot of boyish clothing, and is generally considered to be very beautiful in a rare way.

Gen. Personality: Maven nearly always hangs out with men rather than women, she just prefers their company and fits in easily being 'one of the boys.' She is very easy going and uncomplicated, ambitious and determined to succeed on the slopes. She sometimes forgets to slow down and live in the moment, always focused on the next thing and the next achievement. She isn't good at feeling her emotions, so when they hit her, they hit her like a freight train. She is a thrill-seeker, always game for anything. If she isn't, she's not good at showing it.

Reputation: maven is a favorite around the lodge. pretty much every guy is impressed by her and has or had a crush on her. they like how "low drama" / "low maintenance" she is. they're impressed by her work ethic and her competitive spirit. the girls don't mind her, though they're very turned off by how distant she is with them. pretty much everyone who is kind to her, she is a thousand times kinder and quick to return it, but those who are standoffish, she doesn't have the time of day for. overall, she has an extremely good reputation due to her low tolerance for drama and massive work ethic / results.

Sense of Self: maven is very confident, but there is a lot she represses and tries to push down. she fights with feelings of inadequacy and unrelenting standards for herself and others, and the fear that she will one day get bored of the next thing. she fears she'll lose her passion for skiing, that her passion for any one person will fizzle out and make that relationship a failure, etc. she is driven by her fear of failure and only has a few close people who really know her. the rest she keeps at arms length, for better or for worse.

Family / Background: Alekos's family has always been very aloof to his wants. Unlike a lot of sports personnel, his parents were very reluctant to take him anywhere or pay for any lessons. The boy worked his ass off trying to make his way. Eventually, things started getting easier for him. This, for a short period, made him determined to get to the top, to prove that he didn't need anyone's help, nor approval; Though, soon enough things started to become almost too easy. Aleko stopped trying so hard, and yet, he continued moving up the levels.
