Rosaline stood at the edge of the command deck, her gaze flicking between the captain and the cold, distant planet below. The moment he gave the order, she could feel the shift in the air. There was a tightness in his posture that spoke volumes—something about this situation had him on edge, like a predator sensing prey just beyond reach.
She nodded when Quixor spoke to her. "Understood, Captain," her voice was firm, betraying none of the unease that churned beneath the surface. She turned sharply, moving with purpose as she called for the landing party to assemble.
The crew was quick to respond, understanding the weight of the captain’s command. No one questioned the urgency. They had seen what Quixor was capable of when his focus narrowed to something—*someone*. It was that relentless pursuit that had saved them more times than they cared to admit, but it had also left them with scars, some physical, some more... subtle.
Rosaline could see it now, the way his eyes lingered on the screen, watching the scan results like they were a personal challenge. She didn’t need to ask what was running through his mind. One life form on the planet's surface. That wasn't a coincidence—not with the Coalition's involvement.
She felt the hum of the ship’s engines shift beneath her boots as they slipped into the shadow of the moon, the darkness pressing in like a cloak. It was the perfect cover, but she could tell by the way Quixor’s jaw tightened that the silence felt suffocating. He was already thinking ahead, calculating the risks.
Rosaline quickly assembled her team, her mind working on the logistics even as her eyes stayed on the captain. She knew that look, that determination in his gaze. They were about to step into the unknown, and she wasn't sure whether the captain was hunting answers—or something more dangerous.
As the landing party prepped, she didn’t say anything more. She didn’t need to. The captain was already lost in his thoughts, the weight of the situation pressing down on him, and for now, it was up to Rosaline to make sure the ground team was ready for whatever came next. Because if there was one thing she knew for sure, it was that Quixor wasn’t going to stop until he had what he wanted. And that made everything—even the unknown—feel that much more dangerous.

Quixor

He clenched his jaw, forcing the memories back of a similiar event. This time, it wouldn't be like before. He would not let them take it. Whatever it was. Whatever was had hidden beneath the surface of that planet, buried deep within its soil or lost in its atmosphere. They were looking for it. And so was he.

"Captain," the pilot’s voice cut through his thoughts. "Long-range scans still clear. Nothing in the immediate vicinity."

"Good. Keep it that way." His voice was low, rasping like gravel. His crew knew him well enough to understand the urgency, the thin thread of control he was holding on to. His eyes didn’t leave the planet, the dark side of its moon now looming larger as they swung around to remain hidden from view. His fingers tapped restlessly against the console. "Stealth report" "Cloaking shield activiated captain".

Rosaline, the ship’s second-in-command, approached. She didn’t need to be told twice. The look in Quixor's eyes made it clear that she would be leading the landing party herself. Her unspoken loyalty to him was as sharp as any weapon, as was her own strategic mind.

"We’ll be ready within the hour, Captain," she said, her voice calm but tinged with the same tension that surrounded Quixor. Her eyes briefly flicked to the readouts on the console, processing the information as if her mind already worked several steps ahead of the game.

"Make sure the team is equipped for everything. We’re not just going down there for reconnaissance. If the Coalition’s involved, it’s a threat." His words were clipped, the finality of them leaving no room for doubt. "We find that life form, and we take it back. Quietly. Understood?"

Rosaline nodded, turning to gather the landing party. Quixor’s crew had been through worse than Coalition interference before. They were experienced, capable. But it wasn’t just the Coalition that worried him. It was the thing they were chasing—the reason they were here in the first place. He couldn’t afford another failure. Not now. Not when it was so close.

"Captain," the Lorian called out, breaking the tension in the air. "The energy signatures are fluctuating. We’re picking up more readings—seismic activity—unusual readings from the southern hemisphere of the planet. The source of the life form is in that region."

"Increase the scan radius," Quixor ordered without hesitation, his voice growing colder, more commanding. "And keep the scans running on low pulse. We can’t afford to tip them off." His eyes never left the screen. He had a sinking feeling. The Coalition wasn’t just here for an abandoned facility or a derelict base—they were here for something more.

"Captain," the communications officer chimed in, voice tense, "We’ve detected a subspace signal… It’s faint, but it’s there. It matches the Coalition’s encrypted comms pattern."

"Dammit." Quixor muttered under his breath. "How long before they can trace the signal back to us?"

"Too long to risk it," the comm officer replied grimly. "We need to move now, or they'll get wise to us."

Quixor’s hand tightened on the console. There was no time for hesitation. No time for second thoughts. "Rosaline," he barked. "We’re going down now. Get your team ready."

A brief nod from Rosaline. "On my way, Captain."

As she left to gather her team, Quixor exhaled slowly, his gaze never leaving the planet. This wasn’t just about stopping the Coalition. It was about securing the thing they’d been after for so long—an artifact, a weapon, or something else entirely. He didn’t care what it was anymore. He just needed to get to it before the Coalition did.

The ship’s engines thrummed, and Quixor’s eyes narrowed as the dark side of the moon drew closer. He had no illusions about the danger they were heading into. This was a one-way trip if it came to that. But he couldn’t afford to turn back now.

Quixor looked out of the window, the Coalition vessel nowhere to be seen. He looked at his crew "Whatever you do, fire at will if they detect us, leave if they turn to capture this ship"

"Yes, Captain." The pilot's voice was steady, but there was no hiding the tension in his tone. Quixor then turned and walked out, heading to the shuttle bay where the landing party and Rosaline were know waiting.

Quixor’s heart pounded in his chest as they boarded the shuttle.

This time, he wouldn’t fail.

Rosaline watched Quixor leave the bridge, his tension almost palpable. It settled heavily in her chest too, but she couldn’t afford to show it. She had a job to do—one that came with its own risks, its own weight.
Her eyes shifted to the crew, already in motion as they prepared for the landing. The hum of the ship’s engines was a constant undercurrent, the atmosphere tense but charged with purpose. This wasn’t just another mission. She could see it in Quixor’s eyes—this time, failure wasn’t an option. They’d all failed once before, but it wouldn’t happen again. Not on her watch.
She moved quickly, issuing commands with clipped precision, checking weapons and equipment with an efficiency that spoke of years of practice. As second-in-command, she was used to taking charge when necessary, but Quixor’s unspoken trust in her made it personal. They weren’t just officers on the same ship—they were survivors of a thousand close calls, partners in this unrelenting chase.
"All teams ready?" she asked, her voice low but firm.
"Ready, Captain," the team lead replied, their faces tense but resolute. "We're equipped for every contingency. Reconnaissance, extraction, hostile engagement—whatever it takes."
Her mind flashed back to the reports. Life form readings. Seismic activity. The Coalition. She wasn’t blind to the stakes. They weren’t just chasing any artifact or relic—whatever lay buried beneath that planet had the potential to tip the balance of power. The Coalition wouldn't be satisfied until they had it, and they would do whatever it took to secure it. That meant they were on the clock.
Rosaline wasn’t the sentimental type. She knew what they were up against—knew better than most the kind of enemy they were dealing with. She also knew that the artifact, or weapon, or whatever it was, had to be secured. In the wrong hands, it could mean the end of everything.
She glanced at the shuttle's controls, then back at the team, her mind already ticking through the possible scenarios. The terrain was unpredictable, and if the Coalition had any kind of presence on the planet's surface, it wouldn’t be long before they found them.
"We move fast. We stay low. And no one goes off script," she ordered, her tone sharp. "If the Coalition gets a whiff of our presence, we don’t wait for them to strike first. We make sure they don’t get the chance."
She could feel the weight of her words, the responsibility pressing down on her shoulders. If things went sideways, she’d be the one leading them out, or down. But that wasn’t a thought she indulged in. Not yet.
As the shuttle doors slid shut and the engines roared to life, she let out a breath. One more step closer to whatever lay hidden in the southern hemisphere. She looked at her team, meeting each of their gazes with quiet resolve.
"Let’s make sure Quixor doesn’t regret trusting us," she muttered, just loud enough for the team to hear.
The shuttle dipped downward, and Rosaline kept her eyes fixed on the planet below. Whatever happened, they wouldn’t fail. Not this time. Not under her watch.

From the creature's perspective, the world felt like a maelstrom of noises, flashes of light, and searing pain. The prod's touch stung like fire, and its vibrations sent waves of disorientation through its jagged, tendril-like form. It recoiled further, its sensory tendrils jerking in erratic movements as it sought refuge within itself, trying to hide from the overwhelming sensations.
Pain. Fear. It was a strange, unfamiliar feeling. But the need to survive, to escape, was stronger. The voices around it buzzed and became distorted in its mind, the sharp commands cutting through its awareness like jagged claws. "Get that thing under control,” one of the creatures—Cass—shouted. Her tone was sharp, but it lacked the trembling fear of the others. Her scent was of urgency and authority.
The creature's senses flared again, a flicker of recognition stirring deep within the darkness of its mind. The box. It knew the box. The box was safety. It wanted to retreat, wanted to hide, but the prods, the heat, the unrelenting push forward—they would not allow it to rest.
The humans were moving closer, driving it toward the confines of the box. They were relentless. It snarled in its mind, a pulse of anger radiating outward from its core. But it was weakened now. Its movements slower, its strength draining.
Cass's voice broke through again. “Time for you, to go back in your box.”
She spoke as if it had a choice. But it did not. It did not have the strength to fight anymore, not now, not with the overwhelming pain gnawing at its form. It was a creature bound to its box, forever tethered, until the next unfortunate soul would release it again. It let out a final, low whine as it was shoved back, the familiarity of its prison creeping closer with each painful step.
The box... safety.

Neoma stood on the rocky surface of Alpha-7, feeling the weight of the mission pressing down on her small shoulders. The comm link buzzed in her ear, Tristan’s voice coming through with an edge of urgency, but also something else—something unsure. "Contain it,” he had said, his words sharp, but his hesitation thick in the air between them.
She frowned slightly, her brow furrowing as she processed the command. She was only 10, but she knew how serious this was. The anomaly on Alpha-7 could cause major problems, and it was her job to contain it. That was what she had been trained for. But even with the mission at hand, she couldn’t ignore the strange undercurrent she felt from Tristan. His words had been clear, but his voice... it didn’t sound like the Tristan she knew. He sounded almost... vulnerable?
Neoma’s head spun a little, feeling the strange mix of emotions in his tone. Fear, confusion—almost like he was trying to hide something deeper. Something... personal? She didn’t have the words for it, but she felt it, a slight tingling on the back of her neck, like a whisper she couldn’t quite catch.
Shaking her head, Neoma forced herself to focus. She had a job to do. She couldn’t let whatever was happening with Tristan distract her. "I’ll handle it," she said into the comms, her voice surprisingly steady for someone her age. She didn’t wait for any further confirmation. There was no time.
As she started moving toward the anomaly, her thoughts lingered briefly on Tristan. She knew something was off, but there wasn’t space for it now. She had to contain the anomaly, do what was needed. And maybe, later, when everything was calm again, she’d try to understand what was going on with him.

Quixor

The familiar hum of the shuttle settle Quixor as the planet rushed up to meet them. His thoughts quiet now as they focused on the mission at hand.

He looked to the landing party, including Rosaline, but he didn't quite fully digest her with his gaze. He couldn't. Now was the time for focus. He wouldn't fail again.

The vessel's door opened, a cloud of dust circled around them as they disembarked, and the engines died down.

Quixor was quick to take in their surroundings. He looked up to see the moon and a quiet twinkle of the Vanguard in orbit, in its shadow.

He looked now towards the derelict city before them. He could feel the hum of energy beneath his feet. A weird feeling unsettled him in his stomach. He'd never felt this before. A strange wave washed over him. He glanced at Rosaline and his soliders to see if they felt it too.

"Secure the perimeter" He told his men, and half of them moved off.

"I want the life form within our grasp, alive!"

"Rosaline, report on the energy reading, where is it coming from?" He asked.

Experiment 42

It had made a hole big enough now. The creature it was desperate to get at was quiet now. Standing in the hallway the creature rose to full height, sniffing the air. It looked down at its collar and attempted to snap it off.

Cass

"Captain" She shook Calyx. She lay him down gently, as she let go of his coat, after Zyrix had placed him gently in the hallway outside the cargo hold. With urgency, she grabbed her hip flash from between her straps of guns and her body suit, hidden away for emergencies. She unscrewed the cap and waved it in front of the captain's nose. "Come on" She urged him.

She looked up briefly to see the crew members had backed the creature into the box. "Close it!" She screamed at them. One of them jumped, the other crew members made a motion to close the box with the creature inside. Cass sighed in relief as she turned her attention back to the captain. The crew in a disorganised chaos around her. She raised a hand preparing to slap him awake.

Tristan

Tristan received affirmation of Neoma's task to contain the energy, Dr Eon's presence still looming over him. A mask of fear and awe, as he looked at him for the next move, as his commanding officer.

He held his breath.

"Sir, an energy field has been detected. Its coming from the main intergalactic gateway but we haven't picked up anything since" A man, similar to Tristan said to Dr Eon.

Tristan shrunk back in relief as Eon's gaze was diverted momentarily.

Rosaline adjusted her equipment, the hum of the shuttle still lingering in her ears as the dust settled around them. She stepped down onto the dry, cracked earth, her boots crunching against the brittle surface. The air was thin, and there was a weight to it—something alien in its stillness.
She glanced at Quixor as he surveyed their surroundings, his expression taut with focus. She knew that look—he was trying not to show it, but there was a flicker of unease beneath his determination.
He spoke, and Rosaline immediately snapped her attention to the task at hand. She could feel the subtle hum beneath her feet, too. It wasn’t just the energy—it was something else, something deep and unsettling, like the city itself was breathing.
Turning to her scanner, she held it up, trying to read the fluctuating patterns. The energy was erratic, pulsing in irregular bursts. It wasn’t natural. It wasn’t just a power source. Whatever was causing it was something...alive. The readings didn’t match anything in their database.
"Energy's coming from the heart of the city," Rosaline replied, her voice steady but edged with something more. "It’s concentrated beneath the ruins, deep underground. It’s not just a power source—there’s something moving down there. I’m getting faint readings of…life signs."
She didn’t need to look at Quixor to know what was on his mind. The same thing was gnawing at her. The energy wasn’t just a tool—it felt like it was alive, too.
"I'll need a few minutes to get a clearer reading," she added, her eyes narrowing as she focused on the data streaming across her device. "But we need to be cautious. This place is far from dead."

Calyx’s world was a blur of noise, muffled voices, and pain, as though his mind was struggling to connect with his body. The cold metal beneath him felt distant, unreal, as though he were floating just above it. His limbs felt heavy, unresponsive, as if the gravity of his own body had been replaced with lead.
A sharp scent stung the air—a familiar, sharp tang. He wrinkled his nose, struggling to focus. The smell of his emergency flash. **Cass**.
With an effort that felt like dragging his soul from the depths of a nightmare, he opened his eyes. The dim hallway around him spun, and for a brief moment, his vision was a kaleidoscope of shadows. The sounds of shuffling feet and hurried whispers blurred with the steady thumping of his heartbeat. **Where was he?**
“Captain,” a voice called out, close, but distant.
The face hovering above him was a familiar one. **Cass**. Her sharp eyes, usually filled with confidence, were now clouded with urgency. He blinked, trying to piece together the fragmented thoughts swimming in his mind.
The room tilted again, and he barely caught the hint of movement—Cass’s hand raised, poised to strike him awake.
“No,” he rasped, his voice more a growl than speech. His throat felt raw. "I'm awake, no need to beat me up" he jokes shaking his head. "What happened?" he asks her, moving to sit up with slight struggle.

Dr. Eon remained still, his posture unnervingly composed, yet a storm of thoughts churned beneath his calm exterior. He allowed the report to sink in, his eyes narrowing slightly, as though assessing not just the situation, but the man delivering the news as well. He had always expected the unexpected from this mission, but the delicate nature of the energy at play was something far more potent than mere chaos—it was something even he, with all his expertise, could barely predict.
He let the silence stretch, making Tristan squirm just enough to feel the weight of his uncertainty. Eon’s gaze finally returned to the group, lingering on Tristan for a fraction longer than necessary, sensing his subordinate’s unease. The fear, the awe—it was a familiar reaction, one he often cultivated with intention. But today, it felt… different. Almost like the very air in the room had thickened around him.
"Is that so?" Eon’s voice was low, his words calculated, drawing out the tension as though he relished in it. "And this field—do we have any idea of its origin? Any readings beyond its location?"
Tristan, still holding his breath, gave a subtle shake of his head. "Nothing, Sir. It’s—" He paused, searching for the right words, but Dr. Eon already knew the implications. It was uncharted, a possible anomaly, something far more significant than just another disturbance. The gateway was never still, but this... this was new.
Dr. Eon stepped closer to the terminal, his dark eyes scanning the data with swift precision, hands folding behind his back. He exhaled slowly, almost imperceptibly. "This is no mere fluctuation." His voice sharpened with purpose. "Prepare the containment units. We’re going to need more than observation. I want everyone on full alert."
There was no fear in Eon, not in the way Tristan or the others felt it. To him, this was just another puzzle, another piece to manipulate. But it wasn’t the energy itself that intrigued him—it was how this moment would play into his greater design. And he would not allow anyone, least of all a field of erratic power, to disturb his plans.
As he turned toward the console to initiate the next phase of operations, the shadow of his presence lingered. His subordinates knew it well: when Dr. Eon spoke, the entire cosmos bent in response.
