Emilia Davis | 1:01am | Other doctors here

Emilia stayed sitting alone, her eyes occasionally scanning the room around her. She noticed a few familiar faces here, but still she hadn’t felt like talking to any of them. In a sole hour, Emilia was able to have enough drinks to feel a light buzz. Enough to make her feel somewhat better. Before she determined that she couldn’t walk anymore, she left. Only very slightly stumbling, giving a slight nod to the one that she recognized as Dr. Harvey on her way out of the bar as she passed him, and she headed home.

---

The next day Emilia was more than recovered. Slightly stumbling was basically nothing for her. She returned to work perfectly normal and started the day, jumping into the patients. She grabbed a large cup of coffee from one of the many coffee carts around the hospital and read a chart on her way down the hallway. She was more than thrilled to be here, at this hospital, learning everything they had to offer. Of course, what loomed over her was the fact that she could get cut at any point in time. She didn’t want to, and would do her absolute best not to.

Emilia was headed to her next patient, when a familiar body on a gurney was taken past her. Her brows knitted together, nothing but concern left on her face. She followed the paramedics who were bringing in the unconscious man, just catching up as they listed what was wrong with him. “Tyson?? What the hell happened now?” She asked, finally seeing the patients face, finally confirming that it was, in fact, exactly who she thought it was. Though he looked as though he was unconscious, at hearing her say his name, he raised his brows and opened his matching dark blue eyes, like her own. He spoke, but his words slurred together some. “I’m fine, Emi, nothing to be concerned about here. Go, go back to work.” He said, waving her away. Of course, her thoughts about a diagnosis immediately started swirling. Confusion. Neuro deficits. What else is there? She took a step towards his bed and looked at his vitals as he was getting attached to the monitors, still trying to stay out of the way of all of the others that were trying to take care of him- as he is family.

“I’m at work Tyce.” She said, putting her stethoscope in her ears and a finger on his wrist to simultaneously feel his pulses. No murmur. Strong beat, good pulse. She took out her pen light and forced open his eyes, which he pulled away from, and scrunched his eyes closed again, strongly. “What is wrong with you?” She whispered, mostly to herself. His heartrate was high, his temperature was 104.3, yet he was sweating, normal respiratory rate yet high effort. But he’s a healthy man. Why my brother?

Harvey | Cardiology | Davis, random applicants

"Doctor Harvey?"

"Yes, Paige?" The annoyance and apathy in his voice seemed to fluster the nurse. He wasn't surprised, they usually only sent the people they thought he liked up to his personal office. And, that list consisted of two people. Two people he knew were both in consultations or surgeries at that moment.

She seemed even more flustered he knew her name, and adressed her by it. It almost annoyed him that he was so feared by the staff, yet he maintained the emotionless, expectant look as he sat in his chair, staring intensely at her. His intense sequences of eye contact seemed to be apart of him by now, and he was unapologetic about them.

"You're needed on the fourth floor."

"The fourth floor?! What could they possibly need with--"

"Doctor Jacinthe told me to tell you you're 'not needed as a,' and I quote, 'big shot hospital owner,'" she looked up from the sheet of paper, which Harvey could see Jackie had written on in her big, thick, block lettering. The slightest smirk came to the corner of his lips, but he wiped it away when she looked up. "'You're needed as one of the leading contributors of cardiovascular medicine in the world.'"

The nurse sheepishly met his intense gaze once more as he placed down the paperwork he was going over at once, feeling the slightest rush come over his body as he prepared to scrub up. Today was supposed to be his off day, hence why he'd gotten drunk to the point of numbness the night prior and at some point his two most unhated acquaintances had dragged his sorry, brooding self back to his penthouse. He was feeling the affects, but hadn't ever turned down a day of work because of 'personal problems' before this, nor would he after.

"Very well. You don't have to report back to Doctor Jacinthe, I'll see to it myself."

...

"Step aside, Doctor Smith," Harvey asserted, butting in on one of the applicants who he could tell simply by nonverbals was doing a bad job.

"Does someone want to inform me of what's going on, and why I was called down here? Davis, you're up." Of course, Mason had already been updated by Jackie on his way down to the fourth floor, but thought everything could and should be used to test the applicants. Harvey was silently judging them at all times, and had no guilt about it, either.

Emilia Davis | Peds | Whomever was around her brother, Harvey

Emilia was of course wrapped into her brother's case immediately. Yes, it was known that his last name was Davis, and that he was also 31. However she did not make it known that Tyson was her twin brother, as that would likely get her taken away from his case. Sure, if you looked at the again unconscious and quite sickly looking man on the gurney, they looked alike too. Tyson was taller than her, but had the exact same colored eyes and hair as her. His physique was well taken care of, and she knew that it was something he took pride in. Which made her also know how strange it was for him to fall so ill so quickly. Her brows knitted together, lost in thoughts of possible diagnoses, as she watched his ECG for a few moments.

She helped set a secondary IV. She ordered fluids and some medications to keep him comfortable and quiet. Labs were ordered, and scans were setup to be taken, whenever they could get in behind the other emergencies there. It was obvious he was light sensitive, tachycardic, and had confusion, but it wasn't obvious, to Emilia, why. She stayed watching his vitals for a few moments, a pen to her lips, concern and thinking creased into every line on her face. Soon she heard a familiar, hardened voice behind her, and it ripped her away from her thoughts. She of course recognized Dr. Harvey immediately, and wondered what he was doing down here.

She raised her brow slightly at him, and she spoke up, assuming he wanted to know who the patient was and what she knew so far. "Tyson Davis, 31. Sudden collapse at work earlier this afternoon, brought in by paramedics. Febrile at 104.3 on entry, after fluid bolus temp is down to 103.3. He's still tachycardic consistently at about 133 beats per minute, despite a dose by weight of propanolol, but ECG has been reading normally since arrival. He's light sensitive and showing some slight confusion as well. Labs are drawn and ordered, waiting on results, also waiting for a head and chest CT or MRI- whichever is available first." She said, assured in her words. She hoped that none of them faltered, with this being her brother. It was known to only those that knew her that her only fault was caring for her brother a little too much. This could be the only patient that potentially breaks her chance at this opportunity, and she knew she couldn't blow it.

Harvey/Phoebe | Davis, others

Harvey nodded thoughtfully, a finger pressed to his lips in thought as the woman across the room confidently stated the facts. He showed indifference on the outside, but that obviously caused him to mentally lift her in the rankings. From what he'd heard, she was one of the best in this program. Instead of forming the program to fit her, she'd formed herself to fit the program. The doctors who'd been overseeing her had said nothing but good. She was competitive, diligent, and generally had the patient's best wishes at heart. To him, this made a competent doctor.

"Good work, Davis. That makes one doctor in this room who is doing the job they came here to do. Can I have a word with you in the hall?"

He gave her a solemn nod, gesturing to outside and holding the door open for her professionally. Once outside, he pulled her into a quieter corridor, the lighting dimmer and the silence more comfortable for speaking. "Is he related to you? And, pardon my bluntness, but I suggest you tell it to me straight, because regardless, I'm gonna have a team look into it."

Crossing his arms, he clenched his jaw slightly, firming up an already sharp jawline. He tapped the clipboard against his side half-consciously as he waited expectantly.

"If you have a connection with this guy, I suggest that you decide pretty quickly whether you want to be a support system and a family member or a doctor and an applicant. I'll give you a few hours to decide, but let me tell you something. I only work cases that require a level of prestige my title has to offer, or situations so grave doctors like Doctor Jacinthe, who is well on her way to being one of the biggest names in modern medicine among myself, think that they would kill them without my level of expertise. The information you gave me tells me she saw something you didn't, and that you should think long and hard about which role you want to be when Tyson is at his worst. I'll give you three hours to decide, Davis. When his test results come back, we can discuss further."

As Harvey strode away, a meek applicant came out of a closet, where she appeared to have been crying. She gave a small smile, her face turning bright red as she spoke to Davis.

"Sorry to have eavesdropped, but are you okay? Davis, right? I'm Phoebe Ellis."

Phoebe had dropped four spots this week, losing any sense of security she had. Not to mention, things were not going great in her personal life, and she'd lost a patient that morning. The tears were necessary, especially since she wouldn't have time to get everything done and get lunch. She felt as though this place was entirely hostile, and she had nobody.

Emilia Davis | Peds | Harvey, Phoebe

Emilia hoped that she had said the right things to this man. She knew that he was hardened. Tough, maybe even a little bitter. Curiosity inside her made her wonder why he might be like that, what changed him to be that way. She noticed how intensely he watched her give him the rundown of the patient. Surely he knew that she specialized in Pediatrics, so why would she be here, with a 31-year-old? Once she finished, she stood on the other side of the bed, glancing to Tyson once more, wondering what other tests and labs she could order and run to figure out what was going on with her brother.

At Dr. Harvey’s words, she gave a small nod, following him out into the corridor. Of course, she immediately wondered what he had to say to her. Once he spoke, her face relaxed slightly. Intuitive, isn’t he? She thought, somewhat sarcastically. She stood up a bit straighter and raised her brows, not quite sure if she wanted to say so or not yet. Surely if she said yes, she would be kicked off his case entirely fast. Again, silence followed from her as Harvey continued to speak.

She thought on his words for only a moment, knowing exactly what to say to him. She waited though, until he had finished his monologue. It was entirely easy to tell that Mason Harvey thought very highly of himself, and of course wouldn’t think of himself as anything less than a highly coveted doctor. Yes, she was in this program to win, and yes, she may very well get kicked out for saying what was about to be said, but in all essence, she felt it was necessary. “Why not both?” She said, just as he began to walk away. “Being a good Doctor isn’t about choosing one or the other- It’s about all of it, all at once. I don’t have to decide, Dr. Harvey. I already know.” She said, shrugging her shoulders and speaking up as he walked away from her.

Emilia turned to walk back to Tyson, more tests to order already popping into her head, when suddenly, a meek looking doctor seemingly popped out of nowhere. “Uh, yeah. Emilia.” She said, her brows knitted together, in slight confusion why this doctor was crying. Perhaps Emilia had been too busy with her own patient that she hadn’t been paying attention to anyone else- however, that’s how it had to be. She was here to win it- and nothing else.

I had no idea i owed you a reply lmao))

Dr. Mason Harvey//Dr. Phoebe Ellis

Harvey crossed his arms and watched the girl leave, sighing gently. She was a lot like he was when he was younger. Naive, reckless, precise and calculated to a fault. She trusted her own instincts and her own judgement too much, she'd pay the price. He hated to see it, but felt primarily as if she'd dug her own grave. And, of course, he and Jackie would be on the case, so she didn't have the power she was hungry for. Not yet.

"Doctors," one of the other docs called from inside the room. It was the same weakling from before, and the stress had rendered him incapable of dealing with Tyson, who was getting frequently shorter of breath, to the point where his skin was paler than it had been seconds ago, and slightly bluer.

"It's okay, Tyson, just breathe. Look at me, Tyson." The doctor applied an oxygen mask, continuing to talk gently to the patient. While he was extremely hard on his staff, Harvey was still adamant about delivering an 'appropriate' bedside manner, regarless of how cold and hard of heart he was. He could at least mask his true self for the sake of the patient, and had been for years.

"Smith, go take a break."

The doctor did as told, leaving only one other nurse in the room with him. Her presence was annoying Harvey, but he said nothing, his body language rigid, except when focused on Tyson.

"You're okay, your blood-oxygen level is raising, meaning you're gonna be fine. And, in the mean time, I think Davis went down to the lab to see if your test results are in. And, if they're not, to expedite that process." He gave a small, warm smile and a wink, crossing his arms and pulling over one of the chairs. He felt obligated to babysit Tyson for at least a few more minutes, partially because he wanted to ensure that his condition truly was improving, and partially because he had expected those labs to be done any minute, and expected that if Davis intended to be his doctor and his sister, she'd be diligent about this case.

---

"Nice to meet you, Emilia. I'm Phoebe, like I said." Her slight Irish accent was strong enough to stand out in a sea of Americanized accents, her meek and awkward nature out of place in a sea of entitled, arrogant applicants.

"Are you okay? Dr. Harvey can be a bit...harsh...I just, I care about my peers."

(No worries lol. And I know this is short but--)

Dr. Emilia Davis

Emilia gave a small smile to the girl in front of her, slightly annoyed that she was blocking her way to go grab her brother’s lab results, and of course to order more. She noticed the accent from the girl, but she couldn’t help but wonder why exactly she was here. She seemed so… weak… compared to most of the other applicants. The smile had disappeared as the thoughts in her head swirled, and Emilia hoped she wasn’t silent for too long.

She smiled again, bringing warmth to her face again. “I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be okay after a little bit of yelling?” She said, raising her brows. “As much as I’d love to chat, Phoebe, I have to go grab some lab results! I’ll see you later?” She said, already walking away from Phoebe. Emilia walked quickly away, almost a run, to the lab.

She arrived in little time, “Results for Tyson Davis please, stat.” She said, her voice unwavering. The lab technician went in silence and finally pulled a few papers out of the pile of results. She scanned them quickly, and then looked back at the technician, “Also run an ABG, another tox screen, whatever might not be detected on this one, a D-Dimer, CRP and an ESR.” She said, watching as the technician’s eyes raised. “On who’s orders?” They asked, making a face. “Harvey’s of course.” She said, signing the paper and returning it back to the technician.

She turned on her heels and headed back to Tyson’s room, her pace just as quick as when she arrived at the lab. She returned to see Dr. Harvey sitting in a chair so close to Tyson’s bed. It was surprising to see, really. However, he did seem to have decent bedside manner despite how harsh he was otherwise.

“His labs are in.” Emilia said, handing them to Harvey without waiting for him to grab them from her. She stood near Tyson’s bed, looking at his vitals, seeing that everything was fairly okay for now, or at least it seemed to be.

Harvey | Davis

"...And?" He glanced up at her expectantly after scanning what she'd handed him with a thoughtful precision. "What's your analysis, Doctor?" He put a certain emphasis on the last word, as if to remind her of what she was. He knew he didn't have to, she had enough egotism for a whole team of doctors. In a person, he found that trait most undesirable, but in a doctor, he found it quite useful. The more narcissistic, the more resilient the doctor.

He awaited her analysis of the results, trying to piece it together himself in the mean time. Some pieces of information were easily pieced together, others not at all. It was like putting together a puzzle with pieces from five different puzzles, if the table was on fire and the puzzle had to be completed before it got reduced to ash. He didn't let his concern show, however--years of this high-stress work environment had given him the gift of a strong facade of indifference, of neutrality, when dealing with people. Plus, having fresh minds could make all the difference--as much as he hated to admit it, he was still reeling from losing someone he'd invested so much in only a handful of hours prior. He felt like he lacked the slightest soundness of mind, just enough to keep his mind from being fully, clearly lucid. While he awaited her carefully composed thoughts, he maintained an intense, unwavering eye contact--it pleased him that she never once looked away, always ready for his intensity and whatever challenge he faced her with. She seemed like a competent doctor, and he hoped she stayed that way. It would be a shame to waste such talent on a minor mistake that could give cause to eliminate her from the program.

(I have two or three plot ideas coming up for themmmm, I gotta stick with this LOL.)

Davis | Harvey

Emilia was silent as she stared at her brother intently. She wondered what was wrong with him, her eyes had determination in them, but her brow was creased with worry. Emilia didn’t turn her body away from Tyson, just her head, “I want the scans before I say anything.” She said, wetting her lips with her tongue. She wanted to let down her defenses, show that she was a human, be a sister in this moment. However, she couldn’t. Emilia was not an unkind person, she cared about every patient of hers, no matter if they were family or not.

Emilia just wanted to be a family member, not a doctor. This job meant too much to her though, to just give up. She tried to start piecing together what she could from his results, and the rest of his labs would be available in no less than an hour. She knew that this would be challenging, keeping her sisterly thoughts separate from her doctorly thoughts. She couldn’t be both family and a doctor at the exact same time, she had to keep them separate. This would be the test that would make her or break her here, and set her apart from the rest of the doctors. It was okay, if anyone was ready for it, Emilia was.

(Sooo short but I really wanted to throw a post up! I love this too much hah. And am excited for what's to come >:D)

We're the only two people who ever write here anymore so I figured a name change was due LOL. I'm also going to move this along because I have had plans for literal months and this has been crawling))

Harvey | Davis

Harvey sat at his desk as he awaited the return of one of the staff members who he'd sent to fetch the top three applicant doctors, who were not quite applicants anymore--they'd all earned their places at the top through hard work and diligence, and Harvey was earning respect for them. At the top was Dr. Chadwick Massoulles, an egotistical, arrogant cardiovascular surgeon who could have been Dr. Harvey's long lost twin brother if not for their contrasting appearances. In second was Dr. Jennifer Valart, a leading neurobiologist making groundbreaking discoveries in the area of sleep medicine. She too was cold and calculated, creating an image of the kind of doctors Dr. Harvey was attracted to, and sought to draw into his program. Rounding out the trio was Dr. Emilia Davis, who Harvey had just recently kicked down from second for seemingly nothing. He had his reasons, but would take them to the grave with him.

The trio had entered quietly, and Harvey put aside the stack of papers on his desk, catching eyes with Davis from across the room. He was curious of how she would react to his presence, seeing as they had come inches away from solving her brother's case, and not only had they not been successful, but her demotion in the rankings had only been posted yesterday.

"Welcome, Doctor Massoulles, Doctor Valart, Doctor Davis."

Greetings came and went, and the figure of authority resumed speaking. "You are probably wondering why I brought you up here. I'm not one for grandiose reveals, but I thought I should personally invite each of you to attend the Congress of Leading Medicians as my guests. I am the keynote speaker for the event, as you probably know, but I digress. I have certain expectations of each of you, which I will be sending out in emails later today, and specific tasks I expect you each to complete. Failure to do so will result in elimination from the program, so I suggest you take the rest of the afternoon to pack and rest, we will be leaving at promptly eight this evening for Florida. Unless there are any concerns, Dr. Massoulles and Dr. Valart are excused. Dr. Davis, I'd like a quick word with you, if you don't mind."
